do we have a state tax now vs. a sales tax?

I bought some items at the Georgetown farm supply and there was a state tax at 6.25% and a city tax of 2%. Do we have a state tax now?

Ummmm, yeah. State has had a 6.25% tax rate for some time. Local taxing authorities make up the rest. My local rate is 8.125%.

Most folks I've talk too don't realize we have a state tax because it's all rolled together on the receipt. But yeah we have one, and I prefer it over a state income tax.

I was thinking state sales tax used to be 4%, don't remember how long ago that was though.

    Anyhoo: Rates

    State - 6 1/4% (.0625)
    City - 1/4% (.0025) - 2% (.02), depending on local rate.
    County - 1/2% (.005) - 1.5% (.015), depending on local rate.
    Transit - 1/4 % (.0025) - 1% (.01), depending on local rate.
    Special Purpose Districts - 1/8% (.00125) - 2% (.02), depending on local rate.

I think we need to tax the state myself for being such proud TEXANS and putting up with the US Feds BS.;)
Yeah, taxes everywhere you look and they are going higher real soon.

ok my uncle from Mississippi confused me with the state tax. They pay a state income tax. But, they dont have emission laws either, a lot of states are very similar.

Only the bigger cities in Tx such as Austin, DFW, ect. have emission testing with annual inspections. I've lived in San Angelo since 2001 and there is no emission testing there.

    Farm use no tax

I live in the country on a farm, when I go to hardware stores, auto parts stores, if the items are for farm use I tell 'em and theres no tax. Sometimes if I havent traded there I fill out a simple form to put on file. Where I regularly trade they have a farm use stamp and I sign that.

A neighbor that moved in from New Mexico needed a new bath tub, I told him if it was going into the cow pen or corral he could claim farm use but not for the house, haha...
