I have a problem with this. I realize there is some sort of public safety issue here. I don't imagine the Cannonballers getting a police escort through every town. Imagine your wife or daughter driving a minivan, a wife with the Younguns and daughter with giggly girl friends in car. And super stud Bert Reynolds comes flying by at 103mph. I'd be the last person to say we need a law for everything. But if this is a real stunt lets call it what it is. STUPID

103 isn't fast. If you can't control a vehicle at 103 on a freeway, please exit said freeway, find the nearest car dealership, hand them your keys, and call a cab.

Someone paying attention at 103 is FAR better than the "safe" drivers I see every day traveling 65 while reading books, texting, doing makeup, shaving, eating, etc.

Yeah... No. I dare say 99% of people have no idea how their car handles at "103", much less how to control it at that speed. I know everyone thinks they are a great driver. They are wrong. Unless you have professional training and experience.

I've gotten up to about 92 on the speedometer. Purred like a kitten! (93 Subaru Impreza Wagon) Much faster and my cheap tires would probably fly apart. (Only rated for 85 or so)

I hear you. I was mostly worried about the suspension and tires, the 4.0 I6 in the Jeeps is solid.

Well, to be honest, it doesn't take much to get a driver's license in this country nor do we do a very good job of keeping unsafe vehicles off the road. Having lived in Europe several times as an adult, I have easily driven triple-digit speeds for extended periods of time quite safely. It can be done, but it will never happen in this country until certain standards needed to operate at those speeds are met first.

Anyhow, Richard Rawlings, the guy from Fast N Loud who, along with Dennis Collins finished the Cannonball Run in a record-breaking 31 hours and 59 minutes has issues with Alex Roy’s “transcontinental” record being used in the same sentence as his Cannonball Run record.

Basically, Mr Gas Monkey points out that Roy didn’t make it to the Cannonball Run finish line. The Cannonball Run starts at Red Ball Garage in Manhattan and finishes at Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, CA. That’s what Brock Yates and his team did in 1971, Dave Heinz and Dave Yarborough did in 1979m, he and Dennis Collins did in 2007 and what Ed Bolian claims to have done just this year with a finishing time of 28 hours and 50 minutes. Roy's transcontinental run was quick, but it ended at Santa Monica Pier thus doesn't meet the criteria of the Cannonball according to Rawlings therefore the two should not be considered the same.

    A couple observations:

Folks who would consider themselves "good drivers" more times than not, absolutely freak out when pacing around a track at 70-80mph. I've had more than one passenger throw up in their helmet at pace car speeds.

Richland Hills LEO showed at a track weekend in his Camaro pursuit rig. I know I lapped him twice in a 30 minute session. Granted, I had 1000s of laps on the track. But the officer was cool and humbled afterwards. And I admit, I was surprised I was able to lap him so easily.

    Conclusions:

Speed and surroundings don't always flange up. One guy freaked so badly at 60 mph I had to cut the session short for him, even though he drove 70 getting to the track.

RHLEO admitted that the cone course that was his "training" was no match for the experience one gets at speed and in traffic in a controlled environment.

What I learned over time is it isn't horsepower, but weight and momentum. The Camaro police car was saddled with hundreds of pounds of mounts and gear, all placed in a really bad spot for weight distribution.

Having driven the Hot Rod magazine Power Tour a few times, as well as a few cross country trips, it is possible. I have on several occasions made a 1200 mile trip in 16 hours. Not nearly as impressive, but still at risk for unwanted encounters. If you keep your eyes open, traffic talks to you.

1200 miles in 16 hours is easy. Barely over the speed limit. I have done it a few times if I get lucky on traffic, construction.

First off traffic on most freeway s ding ho at 103 sui you encounter many rolling roadblocks. Most tires aren't Even rated for 103. And then there are the brakes. I'm sure these cars are not stock. But I stand by my S T U P I D claim

103 in traffic at a substantially lower speed is indeed stupid. 103 on an open freeway in light to no traffic is a mere speed tax risk.

There is a wide array of vehicle capabilities, but very few cars are unsafe at 103. Trucks in general are relegated to lower upper bounds on safe speeds, due to the higher mass, higher center if gravity, etc. But even your common Camry is fine poking along at a hundred. It's the drivers who have too much cranial/rectal inversion to afford the attention driving requires, which makes higher speeds exponentially unsafer as speed increases. For some people, the only safe speed is zero.

I did my best to decipher what you were attempting to say. If you are going to call others stupid, make an attempt at a legible post.

As far as tire speed ratings, I would argue that most modern tires are more than capable of handling speeds of 100+mph. The factory tires on my wife's 4 cylinder dodge Journey are rated to 130mph and it's a freakin family car. Far from being "sporty". The Dodge 3500 has a factory speed rating of 112 I believe.

Might want to do a little more research in to speed ratings and what cars can handle before you accuse others of being S T U P I D.

I read somewhere that these guys pulled this off in part by having some home made series of detectors that helped them avoid cops. That, plus the fact they were going for a time record....I doubt they were being stingy when buying tires, brakes, etc...
