Between 1977 and 1988, the US Air Force had a secret aggressor unit based at the Tonopah Test Range called the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron. This unit was equipped with MiG-17, MiG-19 and MiG-23 aircraft obtained by various and mostly still-classified means and flew them against USAF, US Navy and US Marine fighter pilots to train them to counter Warsaw Pact fighters and air-to-air tactics. The program ended in 1988 because upkeep on the aircraft was becoming too expensive.

They sometimes participated in Red Flag exercises, but Constant Peg (the codename for the MiG squadron) was not part of the aggressor wing at Nellis and the MiGs were never based there. The 4477th was based at Tonopah and had a squadron of T-38's as "cover" to obscure their actual purpose - along with officially being a "Test and Evaluation" squadron rather than an aggressor squadron. The existence of the Constant Peg program was kept secret until after the program ended.

The aggressors at Nellis flew F-5 Freedom Fighters through the 80s, then re-equipped with F-15s and F-16s, and now fly a mix of F-16s and early block F-35s that have been deemed too outdated to upgrade to current standards, but still effective enough to mimic aggressor 5th Generation fighters.

There are a few Aggressor paint schemes in the 65th Aggressor Squadron, but this is the most striking I've seen. There's at least one F-35 with an all-over charcoal grey scheme with the standard light grey radome, also.
