Lieutenant General (3 star) out ranks a Major General (2 star), because when The made Generals in the Army the senior man in the Infantry was a Sgt Major and the senior man in the Horse Cavalry was a Lieutenant hence Major General and Lieutenant General, 2 and 3 stars respectively.

The rank of 5 star General was created in December 1944. There have only been 5 Generals appointed to 5 star since then, with Omar Bradley being the last in 1950.

. . . and only one man who has ever been a five-star general in two different services.

That would be Hap Arnold--U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.

    And there has
There has only been TWO 6 star Generals: George Washington was given the rank of 6 Star in 1976, the only Active Duty officer was General John J Pershing, who wore 4 GOLD stars in lieu of 4 silver stars, the 4 gold was his 6 star rank as that time there was NO 5 star rank?? go figure
