In Meatloaf's hit "I Will Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", the "that" which Mr Loaf refused to do has been a source of speculation since the song was released.

But it's in the lyrics, in the call-and-response part with the female vocalist. And I quote:

    (Her)
    I know the territory,
    I've been around.
    It'll all turn to dust
    And we'll all fall down!
And sooner or later you'll be screwing around...

    (Him)
    I won't do that!
    No, I won't do that!

How could it "accidentally" get that hot?
It probably can't, unless the smith has a habit of setting things waaaaay too close to the forge.

But as a piece of steel is cooling it'll look just like any other piece of steel. The glow fades within a couple of minutes, but it'll stay hot enough to give severe burns for several minutes after it fades to grey/black and blends in with any other pieces it might be near. If a smith gets complacent, he might just grab the wrong piece. Or if someone comes into the forge to see what's going on and decides to pick something up without asking if it's safe, they might get one hell of a nasty surprise.

A couple of weeks ago my wife came out to see how things were going in my forge (that's me in the video, BTW). She looked at some of the finished pieces I had sitting on a table and reached for one - then stopped and asked me if they were safe to touch. I married a smart one.
