Christmas in the Lone Star state has no greater defender than Attorney General Ken Paxton. So when he read my column about a middle school in Killeen that tried to censor the true meaning of Christmas, he decided it was time to jingle somebody’s bells.

The true meaning of Christmas has many varied meanings not just the Christian view of it. That's the rub with some people. A publicly funded school essentially endorsing a Christian holiday when they are supposed to be neutral. Either that or they need to have a poster up for every faith's interpretation of Christmas. If it was a private school it wouldn't be a big deal.

Christians generally love religious liberty as long as it's their religion that's getting preference. They generally aren't too happy when other religions try to express their liberties and toss it out as everyone oppressing the poor Christians and showing favoritism to other religious beliefs when many people just want the gov to stay out of it, including those schools ran by the government. Lots of people think it's a great idea for religion to be brought back into school............as long as it's their version of it. My dad worked as a SRO for many years before he retired and one of the schools he worked got the school board to approve prayer at games and before, during or after school events like graduation. Lots of cheers all around right? Until one of the first speeches given was from a Muslim girl who happened to be Valedictorian. She gave a Muslim prayer. Many people weren't happy. Or how about in Oklahoma when they were going to install a Satanic statue because the 10 commandments were going to be allowed to be displayed on courthouse grounds? Everyone was all happy about that until the satanic sculpture was going to go in then they raised all kinds of hell (so to speak) about that, because by god this is a christian country and no devil worshipers are going to put a statute on our land.

I think that kids need to learn about religion as it s a part of our history and our current state of affairs but I think that a school or government that endorses any one religion as their own is a bad idea.

I had a pretty good reply going, but I would be dangerously close to violating the sites religious discussion policy so I deleted it. Let's make sure we don't tread to far. Threads are easy to lock.

I do realize this discussion will be difficult to keep from turning do to the history of Christmas, just keep it civil and choose words wisely.

All that said, I was sure my opinion of Killeen couldn't be any lower. I was wrong.

Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth. That is LITERALLY what it is - not just one viewpoint.

I don't understand the issue with being historically accurate. If another teacher was Jewish and put up Hanukkah decorations I doubt anyone would throw a fit either.

    Just my 2 cents.

It's funny as this Country was founded with Christmas being part of it. And over time the Haters continue slowly degrading this Country's heritage. It is also true that there are many that celebrate Christmas that are not religious folks. It's just haters being haters!!!! I don't like it so you can't have it....

I thought this country was founded by people wanting to escape religious persecution. The puritans didn't celebrate Christmas because it was a pagan holiday.
I am with you guys and feel we should have a Mass for the Christ child and it should be a high holy day. But the idea that this is a Christian nation is wrong. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof... that means no state church and no state religion.

On your own property you can put up a manger. Fine.
Want to celebrate solstice by decorating evergreen trees? Fine.
    Want to do nothing? Fine.

But on public property we need to stay neutral. Just like the first amendment says.

On the founding...it really depends on which wave of Europeans you're referring to.

But if by "founded on" I assume we are taking about the actual founding of this nation, revolutionary war era, and about taxation and representation more than religion.

The puritans didn't found this nation.

Never the less I see nothing in the constitution that directly correlates to the Bible. Three branches of government, three persons of God maybe but that's really reaching. In contrast with the first amendment and the first commandment. We didn't even put in God we trust on our money until the 1950's and then we don't even use the name Jehovah or Jesus.
