I went to shootist arms in Weatherford. Drove about 60 miles to bring him an old rifle to look over: check headspace, inspect the bore, general safety check. I figured he was the expert, he had been recommended by a local range.

He kept the rifle about 12-13 weeks.

When I picked up it appeared he had charged me close to $300 for a 'safety check'. When I field stripped it at home it appeared someone had lubricated it with 30 weight motor oil -still dripping, bore was filthy and visibly crudded up, the bolt body had sand inside it. In short, the rifle was dirtier than when I left it.
I'll admit, I took a recommendation at face value, listened to the gunsmith when I called him. He talked a good spiel but the results were dismal. Either he didn't want to work on old rifles or doesn't know what to do. In any event I didn't get value for my $$ but I did, at least learn a lesson and get my rifle back.

Thanks for bumping this thread, did remember it was here.

I will add one to the list.

    John Dixon
    1911 Specialist
Houston Area - specifically Pasadena/La Porte/Deer Park/Clear Lake side of town
    713-502-0800 cell phone

John does not have a store front and works out of his home. Will work on other pistols, so call if you got something else, but he specializes in the 1911. He's a former world champion IPSC shooter (1991 match in South Africa), and is talking about starting to shoot competitively again.

Good Guy, would recommend his work without reservation.

Can also vouch for Jim Mitchell up in Breckenridge...does great things to 50 BMG rifles these days, too, not just pistols and M14's.

Benny at Triangle Shooting Sports down in Corpus is a hell of a gunsmith. Don't tell him I said that, though ;)

    Aaron Roberts
    Roberts Precision Rifles
    281-651-5593 (work)

He specializes in precision rifles (obviously), but will do basic pistolsmithing. Returns all calls, great guy to deal with, and phenomenal work. He can do ANYTHING you want on a rifle, even make a barrel from scratch.

    He's in Spring (NW Houston)

do you know if Mr Roberts does any work on antique rifles? I own what I have been told by the previous owner, is an 1850 40 cal muzzleloader, which is a cap and ball rifle. The triggers will not stay in the cocked position. Yes, I have pictures. firing mechanism.jpg

Looking for a great Ruger pistolsmith. Need to get the barrel shortened on my Redhawk, new front sight, and action job.

Any suggestions? PS: Located in DFW area.
    Thanks much for any advice!

Anyone know a good gunsmith in Waco? My dad has an old Mossberg 152K .22LR that needs a firing pin and maybe a sear. We know where to get the parts but want someone to look the thing over real good and make sure everything is good to go.
I'll forward any info to my dad. Thanks

I'm new in the area but some old members at my club all recommended a guy named Dee Whitehead in Waco. Operates out of his house. Supposed to be a whiz with trigger work and has customers coming in from several other states. My LGS also recommended him. I took him three lever guns to work on but then BATF suspended his license for some technicalities. They have been jacking with him for months now. I didn't even know a gunsmith needed a license but apparently so. I'm going over to get my guns back until he gets back in business. When he does, I'll post his contact info here.

I can't personally vouch for this gunsmith but I have seen multiple examples of his work and it's always beautiful. I've also talked to him on the phone and he seems like a straight-up kind of guy. Unfortunately, he's been "discovered" by some gun writers so his waiting list is long and his prices are very high, which means I haven't actually used him. So, as I said, this isn't a personal endorsement, just another entry for the list.
