If you're looking to get your CHL, a few weeks - or possibly even a few days - of waiting might save you up to half the time currently required in the classroom. Texas Senate Bill No. 864, which reduces the amount of hours required in a CHL course, has passed both the Senate and House, and is likely to soon become law.

"[T]he Senate Criminal Justice Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 864 by state Senator Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels), another NRA-supported bill which reduces the number of classroom hours required for an initial Concealed Handgun License from 10-15 hours to 4-6 hours. This change would make it far more convenient for CHL applicants to obtain a license to carry and exercise their right to self-defense. SB 864 has been placed on the Senate Local & Uncontested calendar, and final action could be taken on the Senate floor next week." Most likely once the bill passes it won't go into effect until September 1st.

Any word on the companion bill removing the classroom time for renewals?

Yes and it's headed for Perry's desk.

Again, if you don't follow legislation, at least sign up for emails from TSRA. You'll get updates on the related bills. And yes, I'm 99% certain it is Sept 1. I believe besides x% of votes it needs something else to be immediate and this really isn't something that's time critical.

Mine expires August 8th... Dang.
This bill won't help you. It only applies to new CHL courses, not renewals.
