    So what does it mean?

Means they'll just reverse their position on a whim like they've done a thousand times before.

Either that or go in front of a judge and argue a trust is not a person except when it is a person for this one section of law that makes MGs illegal but otherwise it's not a person.

The courts will probably agree since obamacare is a tax is not a tax is a penalty is not a tax is a tax

Sure, and pay $200 non refundable so they can change their mind and keep your money.

    This is so messed up.

The definition of "person" under the revenue code (NFA is a tax after all) does include trusts.

The definition of "person" under the GCA1968 does not include trusts.

Fuggit. I say go for it.

Under the revenue code (USC 26 S7701) it plainly defines a trust is a "person" that can own property and pay taxes.

Under the gun control laws (USC 18 S921) a trust is not included under the definition of a "person". And 922(o) only prohibits "persons" from owning or transferring MGs.

So logically if your trust pays the tax before manufacturing a MG you would be in compliance with both laws. Words have meanings and they can't just say "OOPS we forgot to put trusts but we meant to put it there so pretend it's written there". It would take an act of Congress, signed by the president to change the definition of a person to include trusts.

So if you have a trust may as well try to register something, nothing in the law prohibits you from paying the tax to build a new MG. You won't find a FFL willing to sell you a post-1986 sample, because their license renewal depends on the whims of the ATF, but you could file a Form 1 to convert one.

The worst they could do is reject your application and refund your $200. If by some chance the form is approved, the gun would not be worth the insane price as transferrables, because it'd still be a post-1986 MG and can only be sold to LE/mil/FFL/other trusts. And other trusts would simply build their own rather than buy yours. So doing it for investment is a moot point, the only value it would provide is entertainment.

Based on versatility and/or least complex conversion I suggest:
    HK trigger pack (9mm, 5.56mm, 7.62mm, .22LR)
    PS90/FS2000 first gen trigger pack
    AR lower receiver (Colt LE901 will give you a 5.56mm, .22LR, .300BLK, 9mm, and 7.62mm MG!!!)
Uzi SMG bolt (iffy, would require a full machine shop to mill a long slot in it. But they are dirt cheap to buy and nearly indestructible)

If you want something crazy you could do:
Glock slide/frame/conversion plate (homemade conversion back plate is probably best, if it kabooms the frame is toast in most cases and slide might have blown up barrel jammed in it)
    Beretta 92 frame
    Saiga 12
    Shoe string
    Electric motor housing

I don't have a trust so I can't even try but those of you that do have them, I say go for it.

A lightning link would be the easiest and least expensive to manufacture.

Yeah LL seems pretty simple to make but why settle for sleeping in the ghetto when the Ritz is vacant and offering 99% off discounts.

You could do all kinds of things that make a LL seem kind of tame. Would rather use this window of opportunity to convert extremely versatile or exotic things like: handguns, HK USC or SL8, PS90, Tavor, SCAR, Barrett M82, HK MR556, B&T TP9, Saiga 12, ARX100, Desert Eagle .50AE, AKs, belt-feds, multi-caliber platforms like HK9X and LE901 etc...
