The Grillzebo Project

Ever since we moved here I wanted a place to do outdoor cooking without getting baked in the afternoon sun. Wife finally gave me clearance to build an outdoor kitchen/entertainment area. It has become known as the Grillzebo in the neighborhood. It is a 15x15 floor plan with a half bath/changing room. Except for shingling the roof (thanks goes out to my brother for helping me ) and the concrete pour (hired three guys to help me work it the day of the slab pour (8yds)) I have done all the work myself.

It should be noted that I am not an electrician, plumber, carpenter, mason or woodworker.

I love my screened in back porch most of the time. There are time when the wind pushes the smoke from the Kamado back inside. Then there are the times like when I cooked the porterhouse roast it smelled like a great steakhouse.

Even when I'm not using the Kamado it's not a bad place to waste time watching the deer.

The next series documents the addition and prep of the plumbing. We had an existing sewer line for an RV dump/clean out to the front that I tapped into.

I forgot to add the basic floor plan of what I’m going for, those are shown below.

It has a Cupolla style second roof to let air flow out during the summertime to try to keep it cooler. I know the plan view shows a double stove unit, that’s just a marker for the footprint of the grill that is going to go in there. The software I had did not have a grill template to use lol

and keep smoke to a minimum.

Next was getting the rebar in place to support the concrete pour. 8 yd.³ was required for the 15 x 15 pad. There was no way I could handle the concrete pour myself, so I hired three guys to do the pour and finish work for me. Money well spent!

Sept 24-30

In the last photo above you can see the little harbor freight concrete mixer that I’ve had for over 20 years. Since we moved to Texas four years ago I have mixed and poured close to 30,000 pounds of concrete in that little guy and he’s still running strong.

Granted the slab pour was just too big of a job for him

Sept 30-Oct 6 left the slab cure, then started the basic structure.

I had to elevate the Grillzebo slab to get the correct drainage slope for the sewer tie-in.

Oct 7-14
Originally was not planning on a window, but the wife insisted and we found a 6 foot wide by 3 foot tall window at the habitat restore for 50 bucks. Could not pass that up.

Not necessarily the HOA, it’s more we only have 2 acres and neighbors behind us. No safe direction to shoot.

Started in on the roof trusses, what a PITA these were to do! This is where an extra set of hands would’ve really helped.

Decked the roof and Built and installed the copala.
Got to let the smoke out in the breeze through come summer time.

Seems like a lot of work just to get out of the sun when cooking though. Why not just tell the wife to do her job?
