I have always fancied one of these in .44 or .50ae. Anyone ever owned one? Were they high maintenance?

I inherited a .45 Win Mag from my father, he never fired it nor did I. I sold the pistol soon after he passed, but found a spare magazine several years later and sold it for over $100 - they're not cheap toys!
The frame is BIG! It's too big for my hands, and I'm a big guy. I'll be getting an RIA 10 mm...

I had purchased an LAR Grizzly Mark I in .45 WinMag back in the early '80s. It is basically an all steel 1911 design that is larger to accommodate the longer rounds. Millet adjustable rear sight.

Because of the large frame, it also had optional conversion kits to change calibers. I had purchased conversions for .45 ACP (which I shot 1000+ rounds through), 10mm (before 40 S&W existed), and .357. The kits consist of a new barrel, magazine, and extractor.

I liked the Grizzly so much, I sold off my 1911 Colt Gold Cup thinking I only needed one 45. Wish now that I still had that...

Fast forward to about 2010, after not shooting it much in recent years and being more focused on hunting and concealable handguns so I decided to downsize my collection. I sold the Grizzly and all the conversions.

Fast forward again to 2017. I had some disposable income so I bought another Grizzly! Similar vintage to the first. I also picked up a .45 ACP conversion kit. Had a chance at a 10mm but the guy wanted pretty serious money for it (around $700 as I recall) so I passed. Still looking for conversions and almost pulled the trigger on an original LAR scope mount for it but that went for pretty crazy money. It was even came with copies of the patent drawings.

In summary, great firearm! Well built. Niche market but really nice. Grip is large so not for everyone.

When I shot it at public ranges back in the 80s, I got to try a lot of other unique pistols: Automag, Wildey, and Desert Eagles. People offered to let me shoot theirs if they could shoot mine.

Here’s two of mine in 45 win mag which is the most popular in the Grizzly line.

I believe the 44 mag and 45 win mag are pretty close ballisticly, which is why the recoil of the Grizzly feels like firing a 44 mag revolver. I used to shoot them quite a bit, but now that I am older, they are not as fun to shoot a lot anymore. I enjoy my 45 win mag Wildey’s much more since they are gas operated, thus less felt recoil.
