I’m actually not a fan of special sessions. The limited legislative session serves as a forcing function and, until recently with Strauss and Bonnen has helped focus the lege on party priorities.

While I admire there doggedness, I believe this is an example of be careful what you wish for. We have the limited sessions and easy ways to kill bills for a reason.

Now, the strategic question is what does Abbot do when the session ends after 30 days and bills related don’t get passed? Call another? It makes him look powerless, so no good can come from that outcome. Don’t call another and it looks like a waste of taxpayer dollars.

It looked like a fairly grassroots group, helping to SET the party priorities. I like the list they presented, as it covered a range of issues here in Texas. If they could pass bills to pick off a few of them, it would seem like at least a partial win. No need for another session. They'll still have the rest of their list for next time.

Not the right atmosphere for a special session at this point in time.
