    To stay relevant the TSA puts out annually the number of guns found during security bag inspections. Read more at Truth about Guns blog;

    During 2023, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) intercepted a total of 6,737 firearms at airport security checkpoints, preventing them from getting into the secure areas of the airport and onboard aircraft. Approximately 93% of these firearms were loaded. This total surpasses the previous year’s record of 6,542 firearms stopped at checkpoints and represents the highest one-year total in TSA’s history.

    With a 95% miss rate and 6,737 guns detected, the number of guns they missed was approximately 128,000. This means that on average, one to two flights per day (out of 87,000 flights) has a gun on it that the TSA missed. That’s not an insane number when we consider that the United States has over 20,000,000 CCW permit holders, an unknown number of people carrying under permitless carry laws and an unknowable number of criminals carrying guns for nefarious purposes.

    Doug, you wrote, "With a 95% miss rate" how would anyone know what percent of firearms taken on planes were missed? Seems to me if they were missed, the owner didn't get the missed firearm counted or report it. Who came up with 95%?
    I didn't please read article. Author cites TSA report

    Didn't know that hollywood gunslinger made that many trips - he's almost always caught with a loaded one.
    Out of 751 MILLION passengers in 2022. 9 guns per million passengers.
    49.5 million school kids, 10 shooters 2023 = 0.2 guns per million kids. That number is obviously incorrect as we don't have numbers of guns taken to school with no accidents.

    I think the miss rate is usually determined by TSA conducted plants and tests of firearms. In otherwords they miss 95% of the known planted guns in baggage going trough TSA checkpoints. That number has not gotten any better that I am aware of since they started testing it.

    In other words when it comes to TSA finding guns in luggage....they are pretty much totally incompetent !

    They've already proven that the TSA is a huge expense and a complete waste. It was stood up to prevent terrorist attacks and the last time they reviewed their findings, they have not stopped a single terrorist attack. Considering the billions spent and the ridiculously low success rate they have in even stopping weapons getting on planes, we should scrap them and have airlines provide their own security with certain guidelines. Let capitalism and competition determine the victor.

    So my Mrs is a retired FedEx pilot and was an FFDO (armed pilot) for her last 15 or so years. Whenever she would travel on passenger flights she would check in with the captain and he or she would tell her where anyone else armed was sitting on the flight. She said there was always someone else armed on board - usually an LEO of some sort or sky marshall. Kind of surprising at the time.
