Rock island tactical, a lot of gun for the dollar.
para makes a good GI called the para GI expert. The ruger or Springfield mil spec would be better then them all.

Have heard good things on the RIA in that price point.

the 1911 is such a great design that its hard to muck it up. Even the knock offs perform great.

Haven't shot a Tisas yet, so I can't comment on it.

However, I have a Rock Island Armory 1911 that I've run for a number of years - it's currently at just under 38,000 rounds and the rifling is still sharp:

I specifically went with RIA because I'd heard that their backup-service is second-to-none; I haven't had to use it, but other folks have and the results have been pretty impressive, by all accounts. I've also fitted Wilson parts to mine - trigger, hammer, sear and thumb-safety - and had no issues re tolerances.

They can be a little rough inside, but if you don't mind running a file or sandpaper over some surfaces yourself, they slick right up.

I have 7 1911s - 2 Kimbers, 2 Sig Sauers, a STI, a RIA and a TISAS. I've had no problems with my TISAS, but here are a few things to consider:
    1. As previously mentioned, the finish doesn't wear particularly well. Neither does the RIA.
    2. As received, the trigger pull on mine was 7+ lbs. Adjusted the sear spring and is now 4 lbs.
    3. The 1911 A1 type sights are well, 1911 A1 type sights, so don't expect 1" groups at 50 yards.

TISASs are made in Turkey and RIAs are made in the Philippines, if that matters to you. Quality wise I rate them to be comparable, and for the price you can't beat them. I enjoy shooting and tinkering with them both.

I actually have 56 guns, including the 1911s previously mentioned, and enjoy shooting and tinkering with all of them. Cleaning them - not so much. Just recently found this blog, but monitor and post on several others.

I may consider putting my M&P 45c up for trade with some cash to aquire a nice stainless 1911.

If we're posting targets, then... my RIA's 5-shot group at 25 yards (bench-rested, not freehand):

The flyer was my fault. Those are .45-cal holes, so the group is roughly 2 inches - without the flyer, it likely would have been 1.5 inches or so.

It helps take most of our shakes and wobbles out of the equation, so you get a more accurate picture of what your pistol can really do ;)
