Mainly I'm looking at opinions on on the stripped upper and the barrel I'm looking at. Already know what I want for the gas block and free float. Will buy one of those fancy 300 BLK marked dust covers for ID.

Looking at this CMMG barrel first of all Barrel Sub-Assm, 16.1" MT 4140CM SBN, 300 BLK
Seems CMMG gets good reviews for the price but I'm wondering does a carbine length gas system negatively affect this round? I know some people even with longer barrels will go for a pistol gas system and I don't want to hurt reliability but choosing the wrong option.

Second looking at this SAA stripped upper SA&A Stripped AR-15 Flat Top Upper Receiver, Forged, Excellent Quality In Stock
Reviews are all 5 star saying the fit and finish is superb.

What do you guys think about this for a starting point on a 300 BLK build?

subscribed. I have that exact barrel. I'm going to build a not-expensive upper and may do an "expensive" gas block (adjustable And on/off gas block) with it. that way I won't have to mess with issues regarding ammo and cycling. I'm also doing a pistol with CMMG's 8.2"

I ordered two test pieces from SSA. Couldn't believe the price as Aero sells these things for $89 plus ship. I don't trust the 5 star reviews as SSA can easily filter out the negative. I know Aero was selling seconds and I hope these aren't seconds as the advertisement says nothing of the such. If they aren't first rate uppers, they're going back to SSA.

Everything I've read says you don't need an adjustable gas block on a carbine length gas system as long as you are shooting factory subs and supers. I however am leaning more towards a pistol length gas system with an adjustable because apparently you can shoot a wide variety of reloads including cast (with powder coating or gas checks seeming to be preferred) stuff when going this route and have more powder choices.

The reviews are being filtered. I ordered a sample.. To me, all were blems, 80% in a very minor way, 20% rejects.

I have ordered many new Aero uppers direct from Aero, none of which showed the concerns I observed in this sample. 100% of these uppers all had very very minor blems in the anodizing on the inside surface which really doesn't affect the value. 20% of the samples are going back due to bad scratches.

Overall they're an excellent buy for the price but IMO they are blems or very good 'seconds'. 20% are crap.

Good to know. I'll still take the chance though with such a good price, I don't mind a ding or two, I like to actually run my guns not stare at them :P
