I have a dear friend who was a tank crew in the German Army during that time.
He told me of seeming the people from East Germany for the first time and handing them food and supplies.
He handed some oranges and bananas to a young girl who ask him what they were because she hadn't seen them before.

And generations of us who did duck n cover and lived every day wondering when the bombs would fall actually exhaled. People born after the mid 80s will never really understand that time.

It's somewhat ironic that my wife and I are good friends with an ex-East German Army officer.
He was a technical consultant on some Warsaw Pact equipment I was involved with in the late '90s.

Thirty-nine years ago, Trans American 209, a 707-320, from LAX to Chicago, safely landed after the cockpit crew of Capt Clarence Oveur, FO Roger Murdoch, and FE Victor Basta becomes incapacitated by food poisoning.

Ex-USAF pilot Ted Striker with the help of TransAm stewardess Elaine Dickenson, safely crashed the 707 in marginal conditions at Chicago with only minor injuries sustained by the passengers.
