I've always used a PO Box for just that reason. And it's not just apartments. Those neighborhood Box clusters are just as vulnerable and even more so your Box right on your house. The clusters just increase the chance of hitting paydirt for these scum bags.

That particular crew were real comfortable in doing that.

I had an order of checks stolen that way.
It was confusing coming home from work and there was a message on my answering machine, thanking me for the large purchase, lol.

Worst part was it happened on a Friday.
I drove to Austin after work to see my GF.
I pulled up to an ATM when I got there to pull out money and there was nothing in my account, and that was a payday Friday... surprise.

The SAPD apprehended a gang of mail thieves in my neighborhood last June.

When the Postal Inspectors got involved, it turned out the thieves separated the "trash" mail from personal checks written to pay mortgage, utility, car bills, etc.

The thieves then "washed" the checks and made them payable to themselves.

The Postal Investigator advised us to drop envelopes with personal checks into a Post Office Drop Box -- Inside the Post Office. Do not put out-going mail into your mail box.

    Be well.
