I took my CHL class today and really enjoyed it. I will mail the packet to DPS Monday. Now it's just the waiting for the pin and then the plastic!

One thing that did come out of the class, I had been thinking about a glock 19 or 26 but have decided to look for a compact 45. I now have a Colt Gold Cup 45 and really like it - it's just a little heavy to carry around.

Just curious, and excuse the thread drift, but what did they talk about in the CHL class that turned you off to a 9mm for carry?

9mm is perfectly sufficient for self defense. With all the modern self defense ammo out there these days, JHP's are much more consistent at expansion, and I've seen some 9mm rounds expand out to near the diameter of a .45acp JHP before. Honestly, if anyone tells you otherwise, like as in "You need at least a .40sw or .45acp" then they are just full of it. There are some situations and uses (like for LE duty, which has a completely different set of requirements) where the slightly increased penetration from a larger round can be beneficial (shooting through car windshields or heavy barriers, etc), but for the average person just conceal carrying it's not such a big deal. Honestly, the ballistic difference between 9mm, .40sw, .45acp, etc is really not that big. We're talking semantics here. IMO, it's far more important to find a caliber you shoot well with, can easily control the recoil with, and can make fast follow up shots with.

First of all let me say I hate 9mm's I don't think that they have a place in a duty weapon. In concealed weapons however they are plenty addiquit for stopping some BG with modern hollow point technology. Some one that says that you need something that starts with a 4 is not full of it. They just hold a different opinion. I believe in carrying a calibre that starts with a 4. Other than that I agree with Sig 100% that ballistically speaking they are all pretty close.
