PHOENIX — Travel icon Arthur Frommer says he won't be spending his tourism dollars at the Grand Canyon, or anywhere else in Arizona, because the state's laws allow people he described as "thugs" and "extremists" to openly carry firearms.
The author of budget-travel guides said on his blog Wednesday that he was "shocked beyond measure" by reports that protesters openly carried guns and rifles outside a Phoenix building where President Barack Obama spoke on Monday.
Frommer says he won't personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons as a means of political protest.
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says he spoke with Frommer Thursday and invited him to visit the city to clear up any possible misconceptions about safety.

How does he avoid those big old nasty guns in NY, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and all the other Megopolises where gangbangers and zombies reside and rule the streets after sundown ?

    Thank God.

Now I can go to Arizona. I haven't been going to Arizona because of my dislike of Arthur Frommer. Now that he's not going I can go.

    Thanks Arthur.

Don't go to Arizona! Proud law abiding Americans live there. They must protect themselves from mexian kidnappers and obama.

Frommer says he won't personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons as a means of political protest.

So I guess that limits his travels to Wisconsin and Illinois, since the other 48 states issue permits of some kind or don't require them at all. Granted, not many are open-carry states, and some are 'may issue' states that make permits hard to get, but there would be gun carrying citizens pretty much all over the country.

What kind of job description is "travel icon" anyway?

I agree. Although I am avidly anti-"Obamma", the open carry scenario at a political rally does not put us 2nd amendment advocates in good light. This merely provides the liberal media with "ammunition" to skew and edit to argue their "socialist" leanings and anti-gun positions.

I just got back from the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, I couldn't carry because I flew, and I went to LA and Vegas on the same trip. Anyway, I didn't use, nor have I ever used, a Frommer travel book. So good for him.

I would think the violent crime rate might be a more rational reason for avoiding a particular travel destination. Arizona ranks about 14. Alaska, Florida and even Texas are ranked higher. Let's not forget that ever popular travel destination, Washington D.C., which has proudly held the rank of #1 for nearly a half century.

Does Frommer have an issue with the actually probability of being shot, or is it just the sight of a firearm that bothers him? Maybe the idea of Americans taking responsibility for their own safety and protection sends shivers up his pudgy spine.

I suspect Frommer's position, as with many Americans, stems from his arrogant, but shallow, political perspective derived solely from public education and the mainstream media.

I think Mexico would be good for him to travel to. They don't allow citizens to have guns. It has really worked well for them.
