There is a reason it has not been replaced. That is because no other rifle offers a SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT IN RELIABILITY AND
    LETHALITY over the current m4/m16

Why don't they design one. Like they did in the good ol' days.

I remember asking on the Kalashnikov memorial thread if we will ever see another Kalashnikov or Browning in our lifetimes. I don't see why not and I don't see why cost is an issue when it wasn't in the 1930s-60s.

Sure the AR-15 is a solid rifle, but are you telling me it can't be topped by a completely new design?

well . . . . They have and the designs don't offer much over what we have.

    colt socom piston
    colt socom m4
    hk g36
    fn scar light

the fact is, until we can field the SPIWS Or a similar style weapon system. Say a plasma rifle in the 40watt range, you won't see anything that is significantly better than what we have.

    What are the parameters?

    reliability
    hit probability at 200m
    weight
    cost
    maintainability
    manufacturability

    what else

If they could get a decent design that uses a perfected caseless cartridge it could turn the small arms industry on its head. Either that or some sort of man portable directed energy weapon or maybe some kind of mass accelerator weapon that doesn't use expendable propellant on every shot. The Steyr ACR and HK G11 were pretty nifty designs but never really took off. And the inner workings of the G11 look like a nightmare. Check out the FCG of the G11 (that big mess of gears, levers, springs and whatnot in the stock):

There's NO way private snuffy out in the field could troubleshoot something like that if it stopped working.

The more recent HK416, XM8, SCAR and other piston guns were an improvement over the basic M4 but not a huge enough improvement that turned heads and made everyone say "Get one of those into the hands of all branches of the armed forces YESTERDAY!"

Spare bolts and some upgraded springs and o rings seem like a simple fix. We've spent money on worse things.

Civilian rifles don't see the same abuse, but we also tend to upgrade all those things and use better mags.

Caseless ammo has been tried and was a huge failure. Spent cases take some of the heat from the rifle with them. Without that, the gun overheats quickly.

Caseless ammo with multiple ceramic flèchettes, electric priming, ceramic barrels with rotating chamber blocks will be were this ends up.

Now you're talking! "Rail gun" tech, in a back pack testing in progress. BUT the deal killer is power.

    Isn't it always?

Battery packs currently just can't provide as much energy as exploding goo or powder with the weight limitations of a man portable device.

U should invent a micro fusion power cell so we can get our pewpewpew on.

That is a very misleading article. The thought that the 5.56 round is not effective past 300 meters is simply wrong. The feeding issues relating to bad mags, lube, and springs are just that. Can't really blame the weapon system for a substandard selection of accessories.

Sig's posts relating to materials are spot on, DPMS, S&W, PSA P-Tac, and quite a few others cut corners in both materials and processes. This is why they have reliability issues and why they are inexpensive. Inversely, companies like DD and BCM cost more, but they also produce much better rifles.

ARmalite is on that list but have never been able to get production geared up to a quick speed.
