Remember, it's just a designation, a recommendation from the Trump administration and has zero force of law

    So don't do anything silly

This is helpful, but unfortunately it’s only an advisory. It’s designed to help states and local authorities decide what’s essential. It’s not a federal law.

Also the gun range language is flawed. Note how it says employees who operate a shooting range should be part of the critical infrastructure. It doesn’t say anything about individuals use of gun ranges. When county shelter-in-place orders first came out, they carved an exception for “outdoor activities,” which they left undefined. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Dept emphatically told me that target shooting at a private, outdoor gun range is not included as an outdoor activity. Later, Gov Abbott declared hunting and fishing as permissible outdoor activities, but failed to include outdoor target shooting. As such, Kaufman County continues to interpret to mean it is still not included.

I think this is a mistake and believe the risk of transmission at an outdoor range is very low if social distancing is observed. In fact, I believe it’s much lower than jogging around the neighborhood (a permissible outdoor activity), where I come across way more people.

With that said, I know of two private gun ranges that are still open. Unfortunately, the one I belong to is in Kaufman County where the Sheriff’s Dept interprets “outdoor activities” apparently differently than other county jurisdictions.
