308 and 165 -168 grain bullets is all you need for Elk out to 400-450 yards anything further aint hunting it's shooting.
Know all about it but numbers are just numbers if you can do your job.How many foot pounds of energy out that far do the bullets have, and how much velocity for that distance?
Most bullets require 1800-1900 fps to open up reliably. And a good marker for foot pounds is around 1500 ft-lbs.

I've elk hunted for many years. Within 300 yds a .270 is my gun. 500-600 and the 300 Win Mag does well. I always carried at least two guns on a hunt.
