My latest bolt gun acquisition is a Browning X-bolt Long Range Hunter in 6.5 PRC, which is the magnum "big brother" to the 6.5 Creedmoor. Ammo is still hard to find, and expensive when you do find it. I have just recently been able to find reloading components for it - large rifle magnum primers are scarce as hen's teeth! The 6.5 Precision Rifle Cartridge reportedly retains as much energy at extended ranges as the 300 Win Mag, without the heavier recoil. Internet reviews and data posted about the cartridge are quite impressive. I have only fired a few rounds, but initial impressions are very positive.

If you want to get better at shooting, your money is better spent on quality time behind the rifle.

Spend your rifle money on some good glass and ammo and use your 308 to get comfortable making shots at 800.

When/if you get comfortable at 800, you can buy the Win Mag and move the scope over. Or just get within 300 yards of the elk.

308 and 165 -168 grain bullets is all you need for Elk out to 400-450 yards anything further aint hunting it's shooting.

How many foot pounds of energy out that far do the bullets have, and how much velocity for that distance?
Most bullets require 1800-1900 fps to open up reliably. And a good marker for foot pounds is around 1500 ft-lbs.

Know all about it but numbers are just numbers if you can do your job.
    15-1600 depending.

I've elk hunted for many years. Within 300 yds a .270 is my gun. 500-600 and the 300 Win Mag does well. I always carried at least two guns on a hunt.

The .270 and .300 Win Mag are excellent rounds. I have them myself.
I just put together my .35 Whelen.
It started its life as a Savage 111 Hunter XP in .270!
I highly recommend getting a .35 Whelen. It can handle anything from mice to moose, and even the real big nasty bears with gusto, too.
But the .270 & .300 Win Mag can handle it all as well.
