Using the same Lyman as you. Works well and pretty quickly, gets the cases plenty clean. Havnt seen any pieces caught in the primer pockets as I did with the corn cob media.
I use ground walnut (20# bag of iguana bedding) treated with Dillon polish or Lyman polish. 2-4 hrs in the tumbler and that works for me. I have my tumbler set up on a dial timer, turn it on before I leave for work and come home it's finished.
Reminds me,,, I still gotta get to the PO and send Junky some extra Lyman media that I had lying around.
I used and tried everything. All I use now is the PetsMart crushed walnut called Lizard Litter that is 10 quarts and about $10.00. Plus I use a couple caps of the NuFinish you can find at any Auto parts store.
Lyman green cob, RCBS cob with mineral spirits and some TW Scratch and Swirl Remover and plain old dry cob...currently RCBS but switching to another brand as soon as this is used up. Another brand as in something I can get in bulk...probably #10-14 corn cob blasting media. I also have some walnut I use on really bad stuff.
9 times out of 10, I can hit it with either treated cob and finish it off with the dry cob and everything will be spotless.
The main reason I have so much is because I used to sell brass. Customers would want nice shiny brass for some reason. The last batch of LEO range brass about killed me....30k rounds of 5.56 that got rained on and shipped wet. Took several weeks to get it all cleaned up ready for sale.
Want a really good stain remover? Try this. Get some Lemi-Shine from the grocery store or Wallymart. Lemi Shine® – The hard water expert? Take a heaping tablespoon and dissolve it in hot water....I did it in a 2# plastic coffee can filled close to half way with water. Soak that brass for 10-15 minutes and then rinse well and let dry. Hit it with some dry corn cob and it will shine like its new. The stuff is citric acid basically, so don't soak it too awful long. I soaked some brass that was chocolate brown for an hour in it and then tumbled it in the cob and while it didn't quite look new, it still was shiny. I really only use it on old brass and stubborn stains.
Warning...be very sure not to do this in a metal container. The citric acid could do some bad things to the brass with leached metals from the container.
If you have cob getting stuck in the flash hole, you're using media that's too big. 12/10 is too big. Get 20/40 which is very fine cob but cleans just as good as 12/20. Oruder from drillspot.com and they will ship a 40 pound bag to your door for about $26. Hard to beat that.
I clean the brass before resizing. Any media in the flash hole gets knocked out with the primer. I use walnut with a small amount of chrome wheel polish from Wallyworld.
