    Gunz are icky.
    Both ends of the swing bridge have ramps that have cable lifts.
    When the bridge is swung closed the ramps are lowered to allow automobile traffic to cross.
    The ramps are raised when the bridge is to be opened to allow ship traffic to pass thru.
    It must of been one heck of a YeeeedHaaaaaw moment.

    But the ramp is almost vertical when up.
    The story did not state that the ramps were all the way raised at the time of the blessed event . . . only that the bridge was closed and the gate arm was down. It could have happened in the very first moments of the bridge having closed.

    Around these parts we call that a swing bridge, and not a draw bridge.
    A swing bridge just Swings a section out of the way, similar to a door.
    A draw bridge, at least, would have given them a ramp at both ends, like Jake and Elwood had when they were on a "mission from God"!
    Actually looks like a combo of the two.

    That's a big gap though.
