Is there any reason why I couldn't run a couple of 1911 mags in an ultrasonic cleaner filled with trichloroethelene? The mags seem to be all metal and I'd never put anything remotely resembling plastic in trichloro. They're pretty dirty. After cleaning, do you lube them at all?

I usually use dry lube or graphite to lube magazines.

I would disassemble the mags and leave the plastic parts (base plates or followers) out.

Agreed, hence the question. The mags look like they are completely metal and after googling them, I feel pretty confident about it.

Robert try some dish soap or laundry soap 1st. It's handy, won't take much time and you may be surprised with the results.

Alrighty - Vaquero said last week to use almost boiling hot water - that way it dries really fast.

Hot water and some dish soap is all you need to use to clean gun parts in an ultrasonic.

IIRC, my ultrasonic has a heater, but I never use it. I just boil some water on the stove and pour it into the cleaner. Barbecue tongs work good for pulling the hot metal parts back out. Put them on some paper towels to dry...

You'll want to oil them again after they're out because they won't have any oil left on the metal. Even if you're not looking to lubricate anything, just wipe the parts down with an oily rag.

Yeah, any finish that isn't well-applied is going to come off. That's the downside of an ultrasonic. It took the anodizing right off the rear sight base on my Mk II.

I've heard of them taking substandard plating right off stuff. YMMV.

Not that I could see but was not paying that much attention. It was the only thing in the cleaner. Perhaps the plastic tray that it was sitting on.
