    The UAW's Southern strategy

It seems so, at least in the states mentioned, along with the various companies.

UAW operatives have reportedly spent at least the last year and a half trying to get Chattanooga, Tennessee Volkswagen workers to sign over their rights during a coercive “card check” unionization campaign. The National Right to Work Foundation received numerous calls and messages from workers at the Chattanooga VW plant who were told by UAW union organizers that a signature on a union “card” was actually a call for a secret-ballot unionization election.

Other workers have echoed those allegations to reporters. They’ve also accused UAW organizers of bribing workers into signing union cards. One VW worker even said that union organizers were giving out free tickets to the local amusement park in exchange for a signature.

If that is true, then there are some serious questions that need to be answered by union personnel.

But, it seems employees are responding and fighting back as well.

While UAW union bosses are doing everything they can stop workers from fleeing their ranks, they have found that many employees want nothing to do with them. In North Carolina and South Carolina, the Freightliner workers actually took the UAW union to federal court.

In Chattanooga, over a third (and counting) of the VW workers have signed petitions to keep UAW union bosses out of their workplace, while others have filed federal charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) challenging the legitimacy of several of the union cards. Meanwhile, Mercedes workers in Vance have spoken out to each other and the media in opposition to unionization of their workplace.

Unions are like the LEOs cited in so many other threads on this board. You hear sensational stories about the bad ones. The good ones just do their jobs and are worth their weight in gold.

The UAW will, probably for as long as I'm alive, pay the price for their past transgressions and shortsightedness. Workers who are potential members will, rightfully, not trust them.

I beg to differ Ben (if thats who you say are). There is very little that the unions provide that there isnt some government agency, or law for.

I have had issues with unions while working construction. Getting cooperation from union shops when your not union is a big problem. I believe that unions one time had a place in this country, but not anymore. Unions are one reason why cars cost so much. I believe that you should rise on your own merits, not because your a union contract. plus it is hard getting rid of a worker if they are in a union. just my two cents and experience

I beg to differ with you biker dude. If it was just the unions, then the cars made in Sc, Ga, Tn would be a lot cheaper...but there not.

I think you mean "assembled" ... chances are good that the subcomponents that make up the assembly process are either union or outsourced.

I'm torn on the subject of unions. in my 40 year career, I've witnessed sleeze on both sides of the fence.

    I agree.

Unions are socialism wrapped in "for the American worker" paper.

+1. The Progressives and the American Communist Party founded unions in the United States. If you look closely, their names betray their loyalty: i.e. International ... Union of ... workers ... of America.

I saw firsthand how the UAW drove VW out of business in PA back in the 80's. Not to mention how the United Steelworkers Union's steadfast refusal to take concessions when the steel industry needed to modernize their facilities, which were still using very early 20th century manufacturing methods, caused that industry to die. I have a very difficult time feeling support for most unions.
