These feel much better. Grip choices are a bit narrower on the square butt models. Pachmayr grips were not my first choice but they're growing on me.

I decided to to some research on when it was produced.

I think 1969 due to the pinned barrel, low pre 1971 J25XXX serial number, no dash 36, and light contoured barrel and grip pattern

    • 1957 Was the year they began stamping the model number on the frame beginning with serial # 125000.
    • 1966 Replaced the flat thumbpiece.
    • 1968 Delete diamond grips.
    • 1969 Began the "j" serial prefix.
    • 1971-1972 from serial numbers 1J1 to 999J99(note there are up to 5 numerical digits plus the floating letter J)
    • 1975 Heavy barrel standard.
    • 1982 Eliminated pinned barrel.

Have you considered the original grips or custom magna style with a Tyler T-Grip?

You may also wish to try Hogue grips. They change the grip angle to a much more natural "Pointing" position and are very ergonomic all the way around. They are also very grippy and made of soft rubber.

I would avoid the T Grip, at least from the company website. SW forums are full of bad experiences with them, but some say they are back to normal. Caveat emptor.

I like Hogue grips. Square butt though on the J frame and I can't find any from hogue that are compact as the Pachmayrs.

I like the Pachmayr Compacs on a J-frame. Here's my 649 with a pair that I put on it when I was a new recruit awhile back.

I found all the answers to my questions.
I bet shooting 38 spc is just a hoot in that gun.

It's not bad; the frame is steel and the rubber stocks take away a good bit of the recoil. Plus, they're comfortable. Not really pretty, but very functional. All you need and nothing more.
