Saw this on another forum. I have never been a fan of the wasp spray alternative for less lethal self defense and never thought it was a good alternative to pepper spray despite people talking about how it is legal to carry wasp spray where you can't carry pepper spray or how wasp spray will shoot farther than pepper spray.

The guy in this video is a moron for doing this sort of test. With that said, the test has some real life data. Wasp spray will not cause any sort of physiological stop on an attacker. That isn't to say that it won't cause a psychological stop, but it does not cause and sort of meaningful blindness or intense pain to stop an attacker.

It is not legal to carry wasp spray specifically for self-defense, most spray insecticide containers include warnings stating that “It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.”

Also, the active ingredients in most wasp sprays are pyrethrins, compounds derived from a species of the chrysanthemum plant which penetrate the nervous systems of insects and kill them. Since wasp sprays are not formulated to be used directly on human beings, their effectiveness for this purpose has not been officially tested, and the toxic effects of pyrethrin could potentially be much more harmful or less effective than expected.

Simply put, wasp spray is a neurotoxin.

It'll work well if the guy attacking you is the size of a wasp. But thats about it.

And bear spray is weaker than most pepper sprays, and often create a fog, which sucks for defensive use.

If you carry pepper spray, and have never been sprayed by it, have someone spray you. Better to have your cherry popped when someone isn't trying to smash your face in

It is a violation of state law to shoot another person, even in self defense.

No, wasp spray was not formulated to work on humans. I am not sure why people are so hung up on design intent, but they are. Viagra wasn't formulated to work on erectile dysfunction. Kevlar wasn't formulated to stop bullets. Lots of things work fine for things other than for why they were designed.

I never saw an instructor who suggested wasp spray or read online where it was believed that the stopping agent would be by poisoning to stop the attacker. It was billed as a longer range eye irritant that smelled bad and tasted awful. As seen in the video, it isn't that much of an eye irritant.

Insect anatomy is quite different from humans anatomy (duh!).

    Toxins target specific pathways.
A toxin to one will likely not have the same affect on the other.

Lastly, if I was being attacked, and used wasp spray to defend myself...what prosecutor is gonna bring charges against me for using it in an unauthorized manner?

    It’s not gonna happen...

Just an example article, not a complete compendium.

Different pathways, but dead is dead, right?

Only wasp spray, while dangerous, isn't toxic enough to put down a human in short order, much less stop the human chemically, or hinder the human substantially in any way. In short, commercial wasp sprays have a low toxicity to humans.

HOWEVER, check out the people in West Virginia. They said, "Hold my beer!" and are overdosing on fake meth made from wasp spray.

I do know that diazinon works pretty damn good on unwary humans without a respirator, almost as good as it does on bugs. Fortunately, that little experiment got nipped in the bud before discovering just how effective it was.

    Ask me how I know....
