Short version: We were given four burr oak trees at the beginning of last December to plant in our yard. They were "five gallon" trees just a few years old. We kept them in the planters until early February, then planted them. As of this weekend (and the rains/sun last weekend) one of them gone from starting to bud to having leaves (two more are budding profusely, one is deciding whether to bud)!
Given that they grow 10-12" a year and are about 4-5' tall now, in 10 years or so they'll be respectable trees and in 30 be providing us lots of shade to put our rocking chairs under.
Lots of changes in our backyard since they bulldozed the 20ac behind us to put in two-story houses on 50ft wide lots. These four oak trees in the yard at large, seven trees/shrubs along the back game fence (which will end up getting replaced in the next year), three more along the side fence, and soon to be a line of crepe myrtles between us and the house next to us to give some division and soak up storm water. We also had to take out a few dying/sick trees, so it's a completely different yard.
