Years ago, when I was at Texas Tech, I took a journalism course as an elective.
On the very first day of class the instructor came in and told us the most important thing about journalism. He said if there are two stories side by side on the front page of a newspaper and one deals with something bad that has happened to someone and the other deals with something good that happened to someone, people will always read the bad story. He said people want to read about someone who is worse off than they are. No one wants to read about someone who is better off than they are. He said if you want to be successful newsperson and sell newspapers, you have to report what people want to read. That was in 1970.
