What's the point of the AKM "cheese grater" gas tube cover?

Do they actually do something or do they just to make the gun look cool?
I've looked around and people just say "wow that looks cool I want one".

I figured it would have something to do with heat, but nobody ever talks about the difference it makes.

These things are made of metal though, so wouldn't that retain heat?

Just slightly better ventilation, and looks a bit cooler as well. That's about it.

Wooden/synthetic handguards tend to heat up on an AK. The few vents that they have don't do much. While the metal will get hot, it will also cool faster with the larger and more numerous holes.

They have been available for the SKS for a while (I have an SKS-D that has one), but only recently were made for the AK. They seem to be popular, but mainly for the aesthetics. Semi-auto AKs aren't usually shot fast enough for heat build-up to be a big problem...

They look cool and helps a bit with venting. If you are near the houston area, we usually have a quarterly akfiles gathering and the maker of that cheese grater is always present. Last time we got to shoot some full autos that a vendor brought out for us

I would imagine it works the same as the heat shield on the barrel of a shotgun. Helps a little but of course won’t remove all heat.

I like watching the U Tube torture tests of AK rifles. They shoot the rifles until they catch fire and that place is where they flame first.
