    San Antonio folks,

What are some of the must see or must do touristy things in San Antonio? Yes, I know about things like the Alamo and River Walk. I'm wondering about some of the less obvious things. Of particular interest are activities or sights in the northwest part of town.

    Thanks!!

If you haven't been to the Alamo, then nothing else matters. I have visited the Alamo at least a dozen if not more times since I was a youngster, and I never grow tired of visiting the Alamo. If I happen to be visiting San Antonio, the Alamo is the first stop we make. The River Walk is the second.

Have already done the Alamo, River Walk, and the downtown area. Trying to avoid that this trip.

Mission San Jose is almost as good as the Alamo ....imo. The best part is you don't have to go into downtown & no crowds.

Eat at Taco Taco. Voted best tacos in America per Bon Apetit magazine.

Very good. Only open 6am to 2pm.

Canoe or drift the Comal & Guadeloupe Rivers from Canyon Lake Dam or New Braunfels/Gruene. Eat a steak at the "Little Rhein Steakhouse" across the bridge from Palacio del Rio. Sample the delicious apple strudel from the wood-fired ovens at "Log Haus" up IH35. Take a "Missions" tour.

The Missions are awesome, I also recommend them. I know you don't want to go downtown, but hit the Menger Hotel next time you feel the urge to go to the Alamo. It's the place Theodore Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders and has lots of memorabilia to see, have a drink at the bar and give them a toast. :)

    In the woods...
    I'll reiterate The Missions.
    Full of history.
They were connected by a trail and it took DAYS to travel between them during their heyday and it was an unsafe journey to say the least .
Some still serve as Catholic Churches.

Hill Country Hyatt is in the NW part of town & has a lazy river & pools for the kids. You can get a day pass.

Government Canyon State Natural Area has dinosaur footprints you can hike in and see.

Hill Country Zip Lines in Helotes is fun.

I usually stay at the Emily Morgan when I go to SA. Its right next door to the Alamo.
