This showed up on my driveway. It hasn't been washed or detailed yet, but that'll happen.

If you're not familiar with JDM or Australian market vehicles, you'll find that the fastener spacing for the plates is different than that for the North American market. In the past, I've just used an old license plate (drilled in the appropriate places) turned around backwards as an adapter to mount the active plate.

I've seen a couple products out there to adapt for the plates; however, most seem to force the plate mounting location to be a good bit higher than what is optimal or even possible (due to overhangs or license lights, etc.). Well, I finally found a decent solution that is simple and mounts the plate at the exact same height as the JDM plate would be. One could make a set of these for themselves quite easily; however I opted to buy these and they work like a charm. The kit comes with the screws to attach the adapter to the car and appropriate thickness bushings to give you plenty of stand-off space for you to use your own hardware to mount the active plate to the adapter.

And here's the completed installation of the front plate on my Toyota Century:

If you get antique plates you don't have to have a front one.
If you get antique plates, you're limited in how much you are legally permitted to drive the vehicle. I want no restrictions on how/when I drive my vehicles. I could register it as a classic car and have no real restrictions, but I'm just not interested. I have no qualms about running a front plate, but thanks!

It really is a sweet ride. And this is the VG45-L body car, which is stretched six inches more than the standard VG40 sedan. There's also a VG45 Limo body, with a limo divider, which is stretched twenty-six inches more than the standard VG40. I wasn't really interested in the Limo but definitely wanted the L body sedan. For reference, the 1993 Century that Jay Leno drives on one of the episodes of Jay Leno's Garage is the standard VG40. Also, that one had the column shifter rather than the floor-mounted shifter.

I don't find the limitations to be onerous. As long as it's not a daily driver then you'd be alright. Plus it's just fun to have the antique plates.

Again, I have no qualms about the necessity for front plates on ALL vehicles. It's possible that my couple of decades in law enforcement have had a slight influence on that. ;)

As to the antique thing, I suppose I just don't view a 1991 as an antique, and I will drive this vehicle often enough on bluebird days that the regular registration is appropriate.

This was out there too. I only took a pic because my son is a Honda guy and I knew he would like it.

I'm glad not many cops have a strict attitude, because I really don't like the idea of drilling into the bumper to mount the front plate, and that's how many of the cars I've had over the past couple decades do it. I've been stopped I think three times over the years, it is definitely a convenient PC for the stop, but never cited.
