Ive been doing basic prep work for a SHTF situation. Ive been trying to be as practical as I could and prepare for actual possible situations. If things get to a SHTF situation things have probablly progressively got worse over time. Having an AK or AR would be nice in such a situation but as things get worse I bet more and more gun legislation will be passed. I dont see an all out gun ban getting passed anytime soon but as we can see in some states, guns with certain mag sizes and "scary guns" are being banned. To really be prepared in a SHTF or Bug In situation Id like to have a gun that would be the least likely to get banned by the government. What gun would that be? Something small like a 22? Or a shotgun since it cant hold as many rounds? Or something else?

Just because they are banned doesn't mean you have to turn them in.

Look at the fiasco in Connecticut. They "banned" the scary looking rifles and out of an estimated 300,000 firearms that were supposed to be registered only like 50,000 have been.

I think you're on the right track with a .22 and shotgun of some type. The other option I think would be good is something like the Mini 14/30 or Scout rifle.

But, I don't think a true SHTF or confiscation is coming anytime soon.

Look at all the other countries that have banned guns. What is left? First to go are full auto, then semi auto, then mag fed guns. All that are left are single and two barrel shotguns. Cartridge bans are also in play. First to be banned are mil cals. 308, 223, 30-06, 12 gauge and poaching guns like 22LR.

There have also been pushes to ban synthetic stocks. A bolt action with a plastic stock is a sniper rifle. A pump shotgun is "tactical or assault" gun.

What's left? A 20 gauge side by side with a wood stock. Get one with real ejectors and not extractors and Throw in a leather butt stock shell holder and it's a good choice if not the first choice.

I think Mikewood is on the right track. look to other confiscation programs to understand the progression. I would apply that thinking and come up with a set of guns that fit each category knowing that some will go and give yourself a series of buffer guns. by the time you get near the end of your supply you'll know things are getting serious and can think about getting creative.

I hope in such a scenario we'd be able to hang on to our 10/22's but I think anything semi will go quickly if it comes to that.

I think the Connecticut situation will be more the norm (in that most are not registering) than not so this is pretty far off. But then I never imagined some of the things that have happened would have ever happened.

I would say, .22 or shotgun but have stash of survivor gear, a 1000 rounds of 5.56, and AR15 buried in your back yard.

+1, or make it an AK and not in your backyard (they'll find that). Preferably somewhere only you know, in the country near where you might bug out (make that location virtually unknown). No google searches, etc. Take no electronic devices or modern vehicles there (go by bike and foot). Don't be seen, and leave no trace.

Oh and to your question, the government wants to ban them all. Make no mistake about it. If we were to go down that road, I wouldn't be worried about what the fuckers might be banning.

Probably the last firearms that they'll end up going after are the non-tactical shotguns and the wooden-stock hunting rifles with "low-capacity" or internal magazines.

If it comes to an all out Australia type ban, you will NEED that AR or AK, because it will be ON!
