Not all the time propper shot placement is key. My dad shot a 275-300lbs. pig on the run with a 7mm Rem mag blew both front shoulders out. You would be surprised at how fast a pig can move without the front shoulders.
No, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see them run a hundred yards or so. I have seen a pig hit with the 45-70 and go about 100 or 200 with a similar hit. I was just talking trash. LOL! You are right it's all in were you hit em. when it comes to hogs I've seen to many things to be surprised easily anymore, pigs do strange things sometimes!
Take this for what it is worth.
Long shots on pigs are not uncommon. A good variable power scope would be my suggestion. That way when it is getting dark, you can lower the magnification and still see.
.223 is a little on the small side, but will work with good shot placement.
I use a .308 or 30-30.
Nothing wrong with handgunning for them , but keep in mind that handgunning is purely sport, and will ultimately do very little to control the population.
If you can afford it , GenIII NV is the way to go.
Take it or leave it, but I do kill a LOT of pigs every year.
