    Anyone with good sense in Florida is dreading July 1. That’s the day when the state starts allowing people over the age of 21 to carry a concealed weapon without a permit and without any gun training — at all. It’s the terrible law that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the complicit Legislature pushed through this session as they piled aboard the DeSantis-for-president train, intent on giving the governor the rightest of far-right of platforms to run on, in the hope of siphoning support from Donald Trump.

    If you bother to read the rest of the story the paper wants to make their case with an irresponsible homeowner shooting at suspected intruder through closed blinds at night. The recent law passed is about carrying a concealed firearm outside the residence without asking for permission from FL not firearms in home defense. BTW: On Sep 1st 2023 will be two years since TX passed its permitless carry law with nary a problem on the street from lawful and responsible gun owners. I have read a few stories of defensive gun use as the media doesn't want to tell low-info voters how ordinary people protect themselves.

    And here is an opposing point of view article from FL

    Some experts say they don’t expect the new law to make life more dangerous or significantly increase crime because plenty of people are already permitted or carrying weapons without a permit.

    Wow....that's two minutes I'll never get back.

    What a moron.

    Let's see what has happened since FL passed constitutional carry.

    ....

    Not much let's move on...except Miami Herald is upset that this week the paper’s editors cite a news story from their own pages to complain that the law is leading to more people carrying firearms without any kind of training. Oh the horror!!!:rocket:

    Applications for concealed gun permits, optional as of July 1, have fallen by about 64%, compared to the same three months a year ago, the story notes. And so have applications for gun safety classes, an alarming development in a state where “Florida man” has already given us a top spot in any listing of the ridiculous or out-of-control.

    As this Bearing Arms blog author writes;

    Should gun owners get training before they carry a firearm for self-defense? I think it’s a great idea, but that doesn’t mean that they should have to take or pass a state-approved training course before exercising their right to carry.

    If one takes an honest ‘’look back’’; the inescapable retrospective conclusion is this: We were all better off and more ‘’safe’’ BEFORE there were ANY state restrictions on our 2A ‘’freedom’’.

    Why is it so difficult for social meddlers to understand the simple: ‘’Criminals don’t abide by Laws’’ ?

    Therefore, all their laws disarm only the WRONG people, and promote criminal activity.

    This is also why, if & when a private property owner invites the general public in, there should be no ability for the owner to disarm civilians. If one wants private property rights to remain intact; one should keep their property PRIVATE !

    FL Sheriff opens with bold statement; "There is no reason FL Shouldn't be an Open Carry State."

    Brevard County [600K+ residents] Sheriff Wayne Ivey said he would “love to see” Florida be an open carry state. …

    [Brevard County Sheriff Wayne] Ivey said the U.S. Constitution is “the foundation and the fabric of our great nation.”

    “It says you have the right to bear arms. It doesn’t say you have to conceal it. It doesn’t say you have to have a permit, anything of that nature,” Ivey said. “You don’t have to have a permit to exercise your First Amendment right, so why would you need one to exercise your Second Amendment right?”

    From the Truth about Guns blog;

    Florida’s permitless carry law has been in effect for almost six months now. It’s too early for statewide data, but I looked up a couple of cities that report their data regularly. At this time last year, Miami had 84 homicides. This year it is at 74. For Jacksonville, it was 159 at this time last year compared to 145 this year.

    We’ll have to wait for statewide data of course, but so far, the usual predictions of a huge surge in homicides due to permitless carry haven’t panned out.

    Did FL ever legalize open carry?

    Not in last legislative session. Some reports are that elected officials are taking a wait and see attitude on permitless carry for any fallout from the new law before allowing open carry. So it may be a few years before there is a change.

    Texas passed a concealed carry license law in 1995 and finally in 2021 changed the law to allow open or concealed permitless carry.
