Why wouldn't they? They have new found wealth in oil that is not prohibited from exploiting because they don't allow a bunch of whack-job environmentalists to interfere. They and China will be the super powers after America is bankrupt.

They are rearming because China is looking at them very hard for expansion. China and Japan both think that Russia took land belonging to them at the end of WWII and both need room to expand and they need natural resources very badly, which is very close to both, just across the border.

Not saying that is the only reason for their rearmament, but I bet it is one of the major reasons.

SWJewellTN is right at least about China being the super power, heck if they called in all the debt that the U.S. owes them we would be bankrupt! Not sure Russia has a good enough economy or the national support to be a super power again, just yet. They still have too many issues going on around them in the former USSR nation states.

    Just my .02 cents...

Not too worried. Most of their equipment, along with the Chinese, are very inferior to the Wests. The only thing you have to worry about is the number of them.

Russian cities, local governments, and even the state governments are practically bankrupt. Most are in worse shape than Commiefornia. I believe a lot of this is pure cold war propaganda.

Much of their old manufacturing system was set up to make military stuff. This may be a way to help keep some folks employed. Beyond that, they have to be worried about the massive military buildup in China. Some months back, India ordered 5 submarines from Russia because of their fear of Chinese aggression.

Gettin' closer to December 2012 all the time!

If China tried to "call in our debt" we would say Fook You and they would sit there and take it. If they were to try any Military action against the US or any other western country for that matter their economy would crumble.

The reality of all these reports of how Russia and China are arming up comes down to this: You can buy all the arms you want, but without proper training and combat experience it pretty much means nothing. Take the Chinese for example. The typical Chinese fighter pilot flies 12 hours a month or less, with the top pilots flying 20 hours per month. The PLAAF has no Red Flag, Green Flag, Top Gun, etc., exercise and/or training programs, and in the past 60 years they've been to war only once against the Vietnamese in 1979 and got their asses kicked. Compare that to the United States training programs, it's pilots flying 200+ hours per month, plus decade after decade of combat experience. There's no comparison. Even the hype about the Chinese aircraft carrier soon to be launched is a joke. It takes 3 ships of any class to be put to sea before it is an effective fighting force (one ship in refit, one ship in work up/training, and one ship deployed). Add to that the difficulty in carrier ops that America makes look easy after 70+ years of relentless operations, and you've got a Chinese carrier force that won't be a viable threat for decades to come.

The only area I'd be concerned about with the Chinese is cyber warfare. They have some of the most skilled cyber warriors/civilian cyber criminals, and when you consider it takes only about 40 lines of code to destroy an electrical generator at a typical power plant...well...you can imagine the chaos that may ensue if we go to war in the future with China and they take the war to the U.S. through cyber attack, which they will. Keep your emergency supplies well stocked, it's the prudent thing to do.
