Workers Comp- anyone providing it?

Dad lives with us, has aides come in, he pays them as contractors.
The question came up if we should have them each get worker’s comp insurance. Couldnt find much objective info on the internet.
Should he provide it, them provide it, where to get it, etc.

The state of Texas does not require most employers provide workers comp.

If these people truly are independent contractors, then they are self employed and should be providing their own workers comp insurance.

If dad is providing the benefit, then these folks probably aren’t independent contractors and are instead employees and dad needs to be withholding taxes appropriately and following all the other rules of being an employer.

From what I remember about Workmens Comp is mostly pre 1982 when I identified as a Texan living in Illinois. The cost were pretty high because the benefits are extreme.

I have told the story about a friend back home who is a mechanic & drives big tow trucks. One winter slips & falls on the ice breaking his big toe inside sweet toed work boots. Toe goes gangegreen and needs to go. Surgeon takes the next to too as he say it cannot handle the weight & will break too. Beside full doctor bills paid & income while laid up he gets big settlment in case plus prosthetic shoes & work boots for life. IIRC back when he did it the boots were $800.00 alone.
