I have a used (only been to the range a couple times) Wilson Combat 8rd .45ACP ETM (Elite Tactical Magazine) that I would like to trade for an equal quality 8rd mag that has the flush base plate. Prefer FTF in Amarillo area but will ship.
Do realize that an ETM (and Tripp's) are true 8 round mags and that any 8 round flush mag is a 7 round tube tweaked (follower and/or spring) to squeeze 1 more round in?
It's why a lot of people will only load an 8 round flush with 7 rounds for the defense reliability.
Nope. You can't have a true 8 round tube fit flush.
That's not saying a flush 8 round mag. won't work fine. It's just that it has something done, usually it's the follower, to squeeze in that 8th round. I don't have any true 8 rounders, but I've replaced the follower and springs in some with the Tripp kit so now they are 7 round mags. Others I've put new Wolff springs in and maintained 8 round capacity but only in mags with the skirted followers which are much more stable and consistent.
JKTex is on the money with the original JB 7rd 1911 .45 mag design with the specific single dimple (retention) flat follower - for timing and angle of approach to the feed ramp... the angle of last round would change just slightly, depending on 7th or 8rd inserted on a moded 7rd mag to get 8. However, with the new design of Wilson Combat and Tripp polymer molded followers, that said angle variance were negated...
Metalform supply OEM 1911 mags for Springfield Armory. All of my Springer's use Metalform 8rd flush single-dimple .45 mags that are great, as well as MF 9rd 9mm flush 1911 mags - no issues.
I've also used CMC 8rd flush mags (Shooting Star flat followers) and CMC PowerMag 8rd mags (non flush flat followers) with no problems. Most mag problems arise due to weak mag spring and/or too light recoil springs - a timing issue.
You'll be able to get flush 8rd SS .45 mags from Chip McCormick or Metalform, should be $15 to $20. www.brownells.com or your local gun show will have them. If you've bought a Springer 1911, use the coupon to buy MF mags at a deep discount.
