was a divided nation to begin with
Yeah, if you thought US politicians were bad, you haven't met ours. At least yours are evil. Ours are just, well, dumb...
After the 2010 elections, we were without government for a whopping 541 days. That's worse than Iraq. But the Belgian woke up in the morning, and went to work as if nothing was happening. It even had some nice side effects, having no politicians to screw everything up, we had the greatest economic growth of the entire Eurozone that year...

And pertaining to Antwerp: keep your country decent. Keep it Anglosaxon and keep it Judeo-Christian or humanist... Diversity is not worth it.

    Yes.
Elections are held by language group, which roughly coincides with Flanders in the north, Wallonia in the south and Brussels in the center.
We have separate regional governments dealing with most of the subjects and one federal government dealing with the rest. The north is mostly conservative/liberal (which has an different meaning in Europe, our liberal parties are mostly economically liberal), the south is socialist.
Which makes the wretched place damn near impossible to run.

Just to add that we loved our three years in Belgium! It is a beautiful country with a lot of history and great people! It just has some very interesting and unique aspects about it!

    Cheers! M2

The ruling party in Flanders is the NVA, wich is comparable with your republican party, minus the strong Christian views. They are more right-winged than the CDU.

NVA = Nieuw-Vlaamse Allianti ("New Flemish Alliance"), per Wikipedia they are "a Flemish nationalist and conservative political party in Belgium, founded in 2001 that is a regionalist and separatist movement that self-identifies with the promotion of civic nationalism. It is part of the Flemish Movement, and strives for the peaceful and gradual secession of Flanders from Belgium. In recent years it has become the largest party of Flanders as well as Belgium as a whole, and leads the 2014–2019 Flemish Government."

So not quite similar to the French National Front whose major policies include economic protectionism, a zero tolerance approach to law and order issues, and anti-immigration; but not nearly as far right as the British National Front!
