It's great to see a forum here for all us Texans. Hats off and a hearty "attaboy!" to those who have put this together!

I don't own but a few guns, and none of them are of the "el cheapo" variety that I'd want to risk leaving in my pickup all the time. So I've recently been thinking of getting something that doesn't have a lot of value, in case the truck is ever broken into. There are times when I'm headed somewhere that I cannot carry concealed, and I'm thinking that it would be nice to at least have a handgun available in the truck.

If you have some thoughts on what would be a good candidate for me to obtain for this purpose, please know that I'm all ears. :D Thanks!

Well if you want something that you will not mind getting scratched up.I think a Rock Island 45 or a cheap Hi Point. If you want a cheap revolver You could get a rossi 38 snub at Academy for $289.

I keep a BUG in a map compartment in my truck always, and I'm building a cheapo AR with a 16-inch bull barrel and a folding stock for a truck rifle when I'm out in the boonies. Up 'til now I have been taking my FAL but it is long enough to be unwieldy unless I am out of the truck.

If you really trust your life to an 'el cheapo'........that is a good one to keep in the truck.
I figure that if I need a gun, I want the one I shoot the best. Thus, I keep a 'nice' gun in my truck. If it gets stolen, either way there will another gun on the street. And....either way, the insurance company will be buying me a new gun.

What I am debating with you is this: Why not keep with you, whatever you are best at shooting? I understand you don't want a 'good' gun stolen. However, there is not much benefit of having a 'cheap' gun. Insurance will replace either. If it is taken, there is still another gun on the street. However, if you need to ever use it.......wouldn't it be nice to have an accurate 'good' gun in your hand?

    Sigma SW9VE or SW40VE

The most dependable yet inexpensive pitol I've ever owned is a S & W Sigma. I have a SW9VE with over 3000 rounds through it with ZERO malfunctions. I've never had any kind of misfire. The trigger is long and heavy like a D.A. revolver making it a little less likely to have a negligent discharge. It has perfect (to me) ergonomics and a great S & W warranty in case you ever need it. There were some problems with the early Sigmas but the VE models have a very good record for dependability. I paid $318.00 for mine. S & W is giving a $30.00 or two extra magazines rebate at this time. For details go to; www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/sto...1&storeId=10001&catalogId=11101&content=52302

The Sigma is not my favorite range gun, though it shoots quite well. My favorites are my two S & W MP's (a MP 9 compact and a MP 40 caliber) and a 9mm CZ 75B.

Thanks to each of you good folks who have replied. I have looked at Hi-Point pistols at the last couple of gun shows that I've attended. That is indeed a gun that I'm considering (the C9, since I don't have a 9mm), for it is definitely "dirt cheap", as they say.

The idea of keeping a gun that you are capable of shooting well with in the truck is indeed one worthy of consideration. I'll ponder on that a bit and see what might develop...

I have looked at the Sigma guns. The one thing that would make me hesitate there is that I'm not sure I'd like a gun that is DA only. But I've read a good review on that one recently, and have not ruled it out.

At the range earlier this week, my range neighbor to my right had a CZ 75B that he let me shoot a few rounds through. A nice gun, I thought. The guy's wife had a Beretta 92FS which she offered to let me shoot. I shot a few rounds and was convinced that I would enjoy having that one, for sure!

I'm in no hurry to run out and buy something. No doubt something will come along one of these days that hollers "Hey! Take me home with you!", and I'll find soon afterwards that this is precisely what I've done. :D

I enjoy reading and thinking about the comments that other enthusiasts have to offer.

Don't forget the gun show is this weekend at the alzafar shrine temple in San Antonio. You might find something there worth taking home. Ruger's LCP is a good choice also.

10-4 on the show. Too bad for me that I have to work both Saturday and Sunday, or I'd definitely be in attendance. But I'll be off the first weekend in August when it is held again down at the Coliseum. See ya there! :D

If you want something that you can trust will shoot without a lot(or any) care or maintenance, why not go with a used XD or Glock?

I will not argue with anyone about the hi point guns. I have more than one of them and they have been very relieable. they are very good guns and I can hit what I shoot at. so it is a good gun for a truck gun.

Ruger P95 is tough, reliable and cheap. CDNN is selling them for $250. Or a police trade-in .357. CDNN also has some S&W Model 65's for $270-300.

The idea of buying a used gun for your truck is certainly a good idea too. Maybe you could buy a used version of your favorite range gun?

If you plan to leave it in the truck alot.....in the winter you will get condensation on it if you don't have it in a pouch or something. If you leave it in a compartment somewhere, I'd get something in stainless or with a good coating on it.

I've read around the web some folks are buying Makarovs to keep in the vehicles. Where I live I've never considered storing a weapon in the vehicle, but if I did, I'd have a bargain line Mossberg mixed with slugs and 00 since a pistol is already on the hip.

A Makarov is one of the last pistols I'd choose, I've never found them to be reliable enough. On the other hand as far as cheap 9x18mm's go a CZ 82 is what I gave to my dad as a "Truck Gun", he's a technician for a cable company and ends up doing work in some shady neighborhoods up in Dallas.

I keep a totally reliable Taurus 85 and a speedloader reload in the glove box of my car ... If I lose it, it was cheap to start off with ... but I shoot it well, it's accurate at SD distances and easy to replace. I'm not leaving an expensive 1911 in my car, not gonna do it ...

If you're carrying a weapon on the road, I'm going to second the opinion that you should carry what you are comfortable with and not an "el cheapo."

I'm of the opinion, that If I am going to be trusting my life to a trigger squeeze, then I want something that will go 'boom' accurately every time.

I like the idea of a truck gun, and through most of my day to day, I'll put my Kimber in the truck in the morning when I get in and take it out at night...This way I've got my pistol that I know shoots with good ammo and magazines, but mitigate the chances of loosing it, and If I did, that is what I pay insurance for.
