I have heard the Pythons made pre-1970 are preferred to later ones. Anyone have any information about this? I have one from 1969 I am trying to value.

If if really good condition, I’ve seen them go for $5,000.00. I think they have gone down some since the most recent series is out & its glitches have been fixed.

My Python of that era, purchased new on 12/24/70, has been flawless.

I'd hold onto it - absolutely amazing piece. I always wanted a python since I was a teenager when the walking dead first came out. But that was half a lifetime ago now.

No one can give a fair valuation without seeing it in person... condition condition is the name of the game. And unless you are an expert on gun conditions everything is just a guess.

Let me also add, that if your python is a 6-in blued which is the most common and is not 95 plus percent with box and papers it will probably not bring top dollar.

I bought a 2 and 1/2 in Python from another member here for $3,000. It was 95% + just as he said it was. I also drove about 4 hours each way to go pick it up. I didn't quibble with the price.

Much also depends on your intent.

An “investment gun” is a very different deal from one you plan to shoot & enjoy.

Very few, if any, of those older Pythons have significant mechanical wear, even fewer have been abused.

Way back when I had free ammo and a “private” range, 95+% of what I shot was .45ACP in my, or Army, 1911’s. I always took the Python, and usually fired one or two cylinders of 38Spl,, then cleaned it.

(I never had any free .357 ammo.)
