Like it says I received in trade S&W Mod 581 (miss stamped Mod #) 357 Mag 4' barrel. It's a Mod 581 but on the frame under the yoke it's marked 58-1 (see pic). There's holster wear on the barrel but all in all it looks pretty good for it's age. The bore is shiny and there is no play between the yoke and frame. It looks as if it was carried a lot but not shot much.

One of my old partners carried one of those as his duty side arm.

Got to shoot it a couple of times during quals and I really liked it.

Congratulations on your new find.

Those 581's are a well-known error. I've seen a couple. As I recall they were mis-stamped during production and then over-stamped to correct the error. You can see how the "MOD 5" is a different size. It's manufacturing. People make mistakes.

Mis-stamped S&W's are quite common. They hated wasting frames and would often over-stamp frames to use them up, or just let the error go. It adds no value.

When I did some research I came across a few people who asked about it in different forums.
