I totally agree with MMM on this. If my job wasn't a few hours away from there, that is where I would want to live. This area is one of the more beautiful areas of Texas, plus San Antonio is only about an hour away. I do visit there often.Forget that, find property in the Texas Hill Country! Why retire in an urban shit hole? Look at Kerrville or somewhere in that area...
Honestly, that money isn't going to go far in a big city but will get you something very nice an hour away from them (or less in some cases).
Austin is going nuts right now and the average home price just hit $400k.
Typical of a 60 year old.Any medical conditions?
I can think of a few reasons. Some folks don't want to or are unable to deal with exterior maintenance much less taking care of acreage. With some health problems, it's good to be close to a seriously big med center. I can imagine a retirement lifestyle that involves stepping outside of my condo and getting on the train to go to the doctor/symphony/zoo/museum/library/restaurants/grocery. It would require driving to get to some place to shoot but that may or may not be a big deal. Why retire in an urban shit hole?

Personally, I'd like a place in the middle of nowhere with a benchrest on my back porch.
But I won't discourage someone from choosing "an urban shithole", assuming they put a little thought into the process.
Not Killeen. Military town and a shitty one at that.I am not exactly looking to live in the city. I am looking at the outskirts of those cities. I just didn't know enough of the smaller towns to name them. In Zillow, I was looking at Killeen, Abilene. I have been to Plano once in 2008.
Huh? Glad I'm not typical.Typical of a 60 year old.
