What makes a car iconic? Style? Technology? Racing history? Popularity? Performance?
Or maybe all of those. Here are some of my top picks for most iconic cars of all times.
1. Pontiac Trans Am, from 1969 to 1981. The 1969 Trans Am started a legend in the making for Pontiac. In 1970, with the 2nd Generation of a new body style, it became the status of a factory muscle car for many years for Pontiac. Just a sleek body style, with a great handling and some really good factory performance engines.
2. The Shelby Cobras of the 1960's. These were pretty much race cars that were street legal. Starting with a small block Ford engine, a really great English chassis and body, they were some really lightweight street legal race cars. The Shelby up the game and re-engineered the chassis and body to some degree and then decided to put a huge honking big block Ford engine into them! Brutally fast and and scary.
3. Ford Mustangs of the 1960's. Ford started a movement with the Mustang. Not the fastest car. Not the most advanced car at the time. But a fun sporty car that handled good, ran decently as far as performance, and was very affordable. Probably one of Fords best ideas, that still continues today to remain very popular with many people of all ages.
4. Jaguar E-Type. Manufactured from 1961 to 1975, and based off the Jaguar D-Type racing car. The D-Type cars were a regular in many different races of that era, and won many races. A lot of the influences of the D-Type were incorporated into the E-Type cars when they were being designed. The D-Types were race cars, but some were converted at the factory to be road going street cars, that became the XKSS models. Shortly afterwards, the E-Types debuted and became very popular here in the United States.
5. The Aston Martin DB5, 1963 to 1965. James Bond's car! Not the fastest car, but just being attached to James Bond gave it's own legendary status for all time among car people. It's a very elegant body style in typical English fashion. The body style of the DB5 lives on in many Aston Martin cars of later years. So it's achieved iconic status for years to come.
