Man accused of stealing person's BBQ pit dies after homeowner shoots him; case to go before grand jury.

Sunday afternoon, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the homeowner confronted the suspect after catching up to him. Gonzalez said when the homeowner confronted the suspect in the vehicle, he believed the driver of the vehicle had possibly retrieved a weapon. The homeowner, fearing for his safety, fired several times at the suspect, striking him.

So....what's the problem? Man got his property back and removed a worthless scumbag from the gene pool. Everybody's a winner.
There are several problems. First, by chasing the thief, the owner became the aggressor. Second, the owner was not in immediate danger until the owner created the situation. Third, the jury is going to be asked if the value of a grill is worth a man's life.

The owner should have called 911 and reported the thief's location, continued following, and let the police make the stop.

The fact that society and the "justice" system has made these items problems is the real problem.....

    OGT, you may be right....

But, the Thief started the whole thing stealing property that was not his to steal.

I worked 44 year in the Oilfields all over the world, spending months offshore at a time and up to 10 months per year oversea's away from home to earn money for me and my family.

The Thief should not have chosen to steal property from another person. He chose a dangerous profession and died on the job.

    Sorry, not sorry.

I hope the Home Owner is No Billed by the Grand Jury.

If it turns out the pit was this man's primary source of income to support his family, I hope the grandy jury will consider his actions to pursue from the perspective of a man fighting for his livelihood.

This will be a big topic of conversation later this week at the HLSR BBQ Cook-Off.

You are sensationalizing. The man was not fighting for his livelihood, it was a grill. Grills can be replaced, but you can't bring the dead back to life. The man will potentially spend more in Legal expenses than the cost of replacing a grill.

Y'all might be ignoring the fact he may have had a couple briskets on that BBQ. If I was on the jury and learned he was deprived of his burnt ends...well... not guilty.

I never said remain passive. I did say follow and call 911.

While I am 100% in favor of thieves getting what they deserve, I agree with this strategy. Given our law system, chasing someone down in your car and shooting them would likely result in jail time. Following and getting someone on 911 is a wiser move.
Personally, I would hate to kill someone over "stuff".... although at the time, I would be sorely tempted.
