My MIL drove Lincoln Continentals for decades. When it had a problem she would trade it for another one. I remember when gas prices got crazy she bought an Accord. Her youngest drove it, then a grandkid drove it. That thing lasted way longer than any us expected.

I saw a 1988 Accord on I-35 last week. I bet that thing has over 500k miles on it. Honda and Toyota made (make) cars to just work. They don't have the latest gadgets but they run.. FOREVER. The only cars we buy in this house are Toyotas (I've thought about picking up a Tesla)

My 2024 still has the 4.0. That's the great engine they have had for years...last forever next year that goes away to some turbo 4 cyl crap

It’s the last of the Jap made Toyotas on a Lexus assembly line. Awesome little 4x4. Picked up a 2023 last year. Just got back from running around northern New Mexico in it.

I am nearing a time to replace my 02 Tahoe. Been thinking about a GMC pickup. But this thread is making me rethink, and maybe about getting a Honda Ridgeline. And no, I will not refer to it as a pickup. But it will give me a little room for stuff. (shudders at the thought)

My main reason for the change is I can't easily place my big kayak on top of my Tahoe anymore. So I want the pickup to be able to load it easier.

Don't let the haters deter you from at least looking at them. My father in law had a couple of Ridgelines and they are pretty nice. They definitely ride like more like a car than a conventional truck.

I'd just like to say F you and your shit products.

My son's 2018 1500 Crew Cab shit the transmission in Dec.. with 112k on the odo and that cost $4500....now he is stuck in Belton with the AFM lifters failed and the shop there is trying to bend him over for almost double what I paid for the same repair on my POS 2020 Silverado in Nov last year.

I paid $6300 and that included pulling the engine because the cam was scored...
They want $8000 if no cam is needed and $10,000 if it is.
He could probably get a crate motor for that.

So his hometown shop in Keller is going to fix it for a reasonable price and I'm leaving at 6am tomorrow for Belton to go get the truck, him and his wife and baby and get tow everything back to Ft Worth

So again a heartfelt FU to General Motors for making $60,000 trucks you sell as work trucks to working people that can't make it 125,000 miles with the engine and transmission taking a dump.

Go right to Hell GM ..do not pass go..do not collect $200.
The last Chevy we had? EquiBOMB!

Drive along for a bit just fine...

Then? Step on the gas.....the EquiBOMB would cough, burp, FART & STALL and all four wheels would LOCK UP...

Call the flatbed from AAA. Have it hauled back to the Chevy garage....

They would tell the Mrs., "Oh, the yuppyuter for the rubber lipper wuz out of phase with the yuppyuter for the dong breath gizmo."..

    Or some other malarkey...

    It would drive for a while...then "rinse/repeat"...

Spent a lot of time on the back of the FLAT BED tow truck.

One time. Went to pick it up from the STEALERSHIP. The Mrs. took the Crown Vic home, as she wanted to stop at store whilst in town.

Stealership finished making EquiBOMB "ready"...I got about a mile? (maybe less?) from Stealership. Went to pull out from traffic light. EquiBOMB , coughed, burped, farted & stalled. All four wheels locked up. The Mrs. did not have her phone on?

I hiked back to the blame Stealership. Told them the EquiBOMB was in the middle of the intersection, to go fetch it. They asked where the keys were. I told the Stealership the keys were in ignition...as no one, as he well knew, could possibly start the EquiBOMB unless it got its "two double yuppys & a rubber lipper in sync at the mothership/stealership".....

The moron then said I needed to call AAA again. I told him no way. We had burned up all of our AAA tow mileage for the year on the EquiBOMB having it towed to the Stealership for this recurring problem, and he best get in the Stealership wrecker & head on down and fetch up the EquiBOMB before it got a ticket...

There will NEVER be another blame Chevy in my driveway. Ever.

I think to be fair, this list is all cars 11-20 model years old and around the time of peak automotive. None of these cars have AFM, DOD, light duty turbos, no CVT, and they all have transmissions of six gears or less. I suspect that had these cars all been made in the last few years, none on this list would make it to this mileage due to all the electronics we have now. It’s obsolescence and complication that will kill the new cars of today. Look no further than the 4 wheel steering system GM and on their GMT800 trucks or the braking systems on the Allante. All unobtainum. Manufacturers are held to keep support for 10 model years. After that, then what? Aftermarket has the common mechanicals covered but I’m not so sure about the other “tech” stuff that is more vehicle specific and spans fewer model years between changes

Vehicles have been electronically controlled for years. My 2001 Super Duty 7.3L was drive by wire accelerator.

The 2013 Lexus has electronic steering, electronic throttle, it may still electric brakes but if not my wife’s 2020 Lexus RX has electronic brakes, parking brake, steering, throttle, transmission, etc. we’ve had zero problems out of it.

I personally won’t buy a new truck not because I worry about the electronics so much but rather they have gotten STUPID with prices. I saw a review on a 2024 or 2025 Ram 1500 with the new hurricane engine and it had an MSRP of $83,000. That’s just retarded.

My step father told me once that I needed to buy a chevy, they are easy to change engines in, and used engines are cheap.
He always kept a spare engine for his truck ready to go, in the garage, for when the need came up.

I told him that unless I want to do engine changes for fun, I'd stick with a Japanese car/truck.
He took me out of his will.

    Surely you aren’t serious.

Cars today last exponentially longer than “in the good ole days”.

How often did you see a vehicle with 100,000 or 200,000 miles on it back in the day?

My son’s current 2004 Z71 currently has 403,000 miles on it. Engine is original.

My 2012 Ram 2500 Cummins currently has 232,000 on it.

My 2013 Lexus IS 250 has 162,000 miles on it.

My daughter’s 2008 Camry has 313,000 on it.

You are quite correct, they do last much longer, but I think a lot of what is being brought up in this thread has to do with the most recent generations of vehicles.
My wifes last 4 vehicles all got traded off before warrany ran out. I would not own a 2020 or newer with no warranty.

Most problems with modern vehicles stem from emissions and fuel mileage requirements.

Strip away all the extra garbage and I’d be willing to bet we’d see a lot fewer issues.

    Buy better vehicles.
    Get away from domestics.

Also let’s do some math, let’s say and entire engine, transmission or fuel system went TU. Say it’s $10k to replace.

So let’s go spend $40-60k instead and get a new vehicle because , well it has a warranty.

    Makes no sense.

I think I'm just going to start stealing those Kias when I need a car. I watched a youtube video and it looks straightforward and I never hear about any consequences, other than being seen in a Kia.

    (I'm kidding and feeling pissy.)

Don’t steal the big suv. It’s underpowered. They’ll catch you.

My Son has owned 3 KIA’S. Zero unscheduled maintenance !

Problem is getting through the ignorant stupid sales staff.

Last purchase I went to local kIA dealer & told them exactly what I wanted to order; they refused said it didn’t exist.

Less than a month later, in front of a Pensacola restaurant, was the EXACT KIA I had tried to order.

Same color, interior, options, etc. Sitting there. . . . ..

    He won’t.

I’m still voting for him, but that’s just not gonna happen. Might reduce the penalties that force manufactures to push EVs, but productions already discontinued on many vehicles and when the coin flips all of the crap will be put right back in to effect.

I just purchased a 2024 Ridgeline Trail sport about 3 weeks ago. I wish I had gotten one instead of the 2019 Ford Ranger I had. The Ridgeline is as comfortable as anything I have ever been in and routinely shows a running average of 23 mpg. It has plenty of power for a 73-year old geezer like me. My wife loves it, and that makes it even better. She is almost a complete invalid and has a hard time getting in and out of most vehicles, but the Ridgeline is great. Our Honda CR-V is better for her, but sometimes when she wants to go somewhere with me, I'd rather take the truck. And I'll call it a pickup truck. Anyone who doesn't like that can go piss up a rope.

Does not apply to me because I drive old vehicles that I can fix myself, not 4 wheeled iPads.
My wife on the other hand can't and would not do a roadside repair, so she drives new Toyotas with warranty.
