I have an AR and would like a hunting caliber upper. I feel 5.56 is not enough for deer or bigger game.
What're the perks of a AK round upper? Is it good for moderate/longer range? Could it take a mule deer? Or anything past 250 yds?
If not, what's a popular, good/powerful round upper, that's gonna be on the shelves at the store (academy) IE: I never see these fancy rounds at the store. Thanks

I perfer to have a .308 for hunting. Good out to 700 yards and ammo easy to get.

I have a .30-06 with a nice scope that I reserve for deer.
Also, you said 700 yds. How do you sight in to the range? My scope has the doping marks on the cross hairs. Never tested them since my scope isn't spot on.

Shooting long distance is a entirely different subject not something you will learn from one post. It takes many hours on the range to actually learn. Alot of variables go into play outside of your caliber or scope. Even the heat off the ground surface can play a major role in if your on target or off by yards.

But my 308 has killed 700 yards out. I can place holes out to 1000 yards, but Im not sure it has the punch for that far. For 800 yards plus I'd go with a 300 win mag. That will have the killing power up to 1300 yards, but it will be more costly to practice with and shoulder will hurt a little bit more.

If you wanna get even bigger the 338 luppa mag. Confirmed kill at 2707 yards, thats over 1.5 miles.

IMHO a 308 or 30-06 will be enough for 95% of shooters out there.

NOTE: Im not expert on long distance shooting, hell I dont even own a gun. This was written strictly for fictional entertainment purposes only.

The 7.62x38 is not a good 700 yd. gun, imo. You're limited to bullet weight and it has a low velocity. There are many other calibers available to choose from that will do a lot better. I've heard the 7.62x39 compared to a 30:30 many times regarding hunting. Not a bad thing, but definitely not a 700 yd thing.

I've heard 6.5 Grendel is excellent for distance. My only problem is an upper is around $600

6.5 or 6.8 mm calibers are excellent hunting rds compatible with AR platform rifles, with many types & wieghts of bullets. Particularly good if you are a reloader.

    Crush, kill, mangle, maim, destroy.

Yep. I love my 6.5 Grendel. I researched the hell out of it and I don't think there is a better round that will fit in an AR-15 platform. It has excellent ballistic coefficients and people are dropping game with it well over 500 yards.

I have a AR-47 in x39 (Palmeto State). Runs like a champ and shares SKS/AK surplus ammo as well as my handloads. Only have to swap upper and magazine.
