Are the Mossberg 500’s not what people say?

I know this will probably trigger some Mossberg lovers but how could this shotgun possibly beat out the 870 or the 1300 in reliability or ease? I cleaned one up for a friend and it felt like it was made of cheap Chinesium with the aluminum and plastic. Pulled the trigger pack out and had both shell stops fall out. Also while torqing on the barrel nut the stock twisted on the receiver. I know it was my first time to mess with a Mossberg but it was much more difficult to manipulate in putting back together than any Winchester, Remington, Benelli or Beretta. Felt as if I needed a third hand. The only other pump I disliked cleaning this much was the Browning BPS but atleast that was good ol metal not plastic. I know the military adopted these but that doesn’t always mean they are the best.

First, Because they're cheap.
That's why the .mil adopted them. They work and they're cheap.
I've seen some M500's that look like they've been put thru a grinding machine yet they still work.

Secondly, they're available. Most any Mom&Pop gun shop as well as the Big Box stores actually have the things on the shelf for folks to buy.
When was the last time you saw a vintage M870 on the rack for sale? I'm not talking an 870 Express but a real deal 1960's Wingmaster. I never see them any more.

Look at the aftermarket for them. Tons of accessories.

Myself I do not care for them. The ergonomics on them are off for me. The Remingtons fit me much better.

Moo pie, I agree with that! One of my friends swears by them but I just don’t think he’s used anything better. I have an early 70’s 870 wingmaster that’s action is slicker than butter and still tight. This Mossberg has a lot of slop and yet fairly new. I’ve also had the 870 express that would rust just by looking at it bust was still pretty simple

They’r kind if the AK/SKS of the shotgun world. Cheap, reliable, and they work.

When reassembling a M500, I use 2 small but strong magnets on the outside of both sides of the receiver to hold the cartridge stop and the cartridge interrupter in place.......it makes it easy to reassemble.......

I love my 590a1. Deputy had it before me. Pretty sure it killed crackheads. Makes me love it more.

I have a 590, it goes bang every time I pull the trigger. They do work but personally I prefer the feel of an 870.

I’ve been eyeballing a 590A1 for years and need to just do it at some point. Not that I don’t have the funds, just haven’t ordered one.

But I do like 500s. The wife likes hers too.

Trigger guard is metal on the 590a1. As for other differences, maybe others here know more.

The military version, 590A1 is a heavier gun, thicker barrel and all steel trigger pack. They are a beast. Much like original 870 all steel guns moonpie alluded to.

While the 500s, and even Mavericks, will last most owners forever and serve them well they are not what is issued or used by the military.

My experience is over 40 years out of date, but I chose the Mossberg because of the thumb-safety (I'm lefthanded). But that safety disassembled itself twice in the 2 weeks I had it. Returned it & swapped for a 870 Wingmaster. Happy ever since.
